175,000 Curious George Dolls and 51,000 Children's Sunglasses Recalled for Excessive Lead

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today a voluntary recall of approximately 175,000 Curious George plush dolls manufactured in China by Marvel Toys. According to the recall, surface paint used on the toy's plastic face and construction hat contain excessive levels of lead - violating the federal lead paint standard and posing a risk of lead exposure to children.

The toys affected by the recall are 12 inch Curious George plush dolls sold with a story book or activity book. The recalled toys are dressed in one of five themes: birthday, fireman, sweet dreams, and tool time, all with a plastic face, and tool time with a soft face.

Numbers printed on the packaging may include:

Birthday : 90253/ 8-83199-90253-5

Fireman : 90246/ 8-83199-90246-7

Sweet Dreams : 90247/ 8-83199-90247-4

Tool Time : 90251/ 8-83199-90251-1

Tool Time (soft face) : 90251/ 8-83199-90251-1

The recalled toys were sold at toy stores and discount department stores all over the US from December 2005 through August 2007 and retailed for around $15.00.

Consumers are urged to immediately take the toys away from children and contact Marvel toys for a refund. Marvel Toys can be reached at 800 352-2064 from 7 am to 6 pm, Central Time, Monday through Friday.

The CPSC also announced today the voluntary recall of about 51,000 pairs of yellow children's sunglasses, manufactured in China and imported by Dolgencorp of Tennessee, because the paint used on the glasses may contain excessive levels of lead.

The glasses, which bear the word "CHINA" on the left side of the frame, were sold at Dollar General stores for about $1 between March 2005 and October 2007. The red hang-tag on the glasses should include the Universal Product Code (UPC) 400007860896, along with the words "Fashion Sunglasses" and "Time to Play Every Day".

The Recall advises consumers to immediately take the glasses away from children and return them to any Dollar General store for a refund. For more information, consumers may contact Dollar General at (800) 678-9258 from 9 am to 6 pm Eastern Monday through Friday.

Numerous toys have been recalled in recent weeks due to violation of the federal lead standard, which was put in place by the CPSC in 1978 to protect consumers from the health risks of lead exposure. The standard bans the use of paint containing greater than .06 percent lead in toys and many other consumer products manufactured in the United States.
