1930s Inspired Makeup Look

Leann Rimes' "Swingin" Video

This look is all about the hair and cheekbones, sometimes lip color, too, but since my inspiration is Leann Rime's "Swingin" video, the lips can go either very red or more of a fleshy mauve tone. I love this look because it's simple, clean and very everyday wearable. It can be worn several different ways by just changing out a few items.

To start off, always start with a clean canvas. Apply moisturizer, cream, etc. the way you normally would. I always wear a moisturizer with an SPF for the skin protection unless my makeup contains SPF already. Most importantly, don't forget to apply primer to your eyelids. Once you've prepped your face it's time to gather up your tools.

What you'll need to pull off this look is a highlighter, fairly neutral color shadows like tans or browns; auburn is a good color for those with darker skin tone. A black pencil liner, smudge brush or cotton swab, your favorite mascara, a rosy colored blush or bronzer if you're going for something a little more natural like Leann Rimes. For the lips I'd recommend cherry red like Rimmel's 'Red Alert' or something more pinky mauve in color like NYX's 'Apollo.'

As I've mentioned before this look is very simple, so the first step is to apply your neutral color shadow along your eyelids, but keep it below the crease. Take a fluffy shadow brush and blend out along the edges so the line doesn't look harsh. Next, apply your black liner along your top lash line and using a smudge brush or cotton swab, gently smudge it so the line, again, so it won't look harsh. Now curl your lashes and apply a few coats of mascara. Your eyes are complete. Simple right?

Moving on to the rest of your face. Take your blush or bronzer and sweep it along your cheekbones; really make it pop. Then apply your lipstick of choice. To finish off this look ala Leann Rime's "Swingin" video, take your highlighter and apply it along your brow bone and just above your cheekbones. This will make those areas pop a little more and give your overall look a dewy-ness. And lastly, don't forget to groom your eyebrows, it's what brings the whole look together.

This look can be worn any day for any occasion. You can dress it up or down by simply changing up your lipstick and hairstyle. Of course if you're really going for that retro look appropriate clothing would really help. What ever you do have fun with it and enjoy!
