1936 World Series Game 5 Ticket Review and Stub Appraisal

Michael Luchies
The 1936 World Series was a classic one played between the New York Giants and New York Yankees. A year after the Yankees had released legend Babe Ruth they were back in the World Series against their cross-town rivals. The Yankees featured a lineup with Gehrig and DiMaggio and had Hall of Fame pitcher Red Ruffing who started Game 5 for the Yankees. The Yankees won the series in 6 games.

Game 5 was won after 10 innings when the Yankees failed to match the run driven in by the Giants in the top of the 10th at Yankee Stadium. Hal Schumacher pitched the complete game win with 10 strikeouts for the Giants. George Selkirk had the game's only home run in the second inning in the 4-5 loss for the Yankees. Complete box score can be found here on Baseball-Almanac.

The ticket displays well and has minimal creasing which is rare for a ticket over 70 years old. The tear at the gate left over 50% of the ticket, which also helps the value. The back of the ticket contains paper remains from a scrapbook which significantly decrease the value of the piece. The coloration is good of the ticket and does not show damage from being exposed to an excessive amount of light. The section of the ticket can determine value, in this case the Rail Box Res. seating in the lower grandstand may be favorable to someone looking for a ticket from the lower level and close to the field. Please see the pictures of the ticket both front and back.

Appraisal: $170-195

The ticket would be worth more if complete instead of a stub, and without the damage on the back would fetch over $200 and possibly around $300.

General price guide found online suggests $150-225 for any ticket in this series but does not take into consideration each game, the events, attendance, and condition of the ticket.
