1958 VW Beetle 1200 Deluxe! It is best to drive such a Beetle during the warm
weather
months to avoid the car's notorious no heat and frosted windows during the winter.
However, if you equip the car with an optional electric heater, with its 15 inch tires,
the Beetle will be great in snow as most of the car's weight is on the rear axle.
What else does the car offer that adds to its character? It has chrome hubcaps,
bumpers, front headlight rings, hood and engine lid pulls, door handles, etc. On
the mechanical side, the Beetle has always been a simple car and such rings true
with the 1958 1200 Deluxe. No water pump, radiator and the assorted hoses, (ECU)
Electronic Control Unit or any other computer for that matter.
The car's steering is tight and direct. The four speed manual transmission
gets the most out of the Beetle's 1192 cc horizontally-opposed four cylinder 36 hp
engine. And although the horsepower is low, the Beetle's light weight at about
1600 lbs allows it to run all day at 60-65 mph. The car's gas mileage on the highway
is about 31 mpg.
The interior of the 58 Beetle 1200 Deluxe is sparse by today's standard. However,
you can count on the Beetle's supportive seats, convenient ergonomics, and controls
that are satisfying to operate. Wood grain dash kits are fairly inexpensive and an easily
way to turn the car's interior up a notch.
Why consider a 1958 Volkswagen Beetle 1200 Deluxe? Well, if you get one that
is in good condition, it is a collectable piece. Additionally, it will provide a simple
and inexpensive way to get around.
Certainly the Beetle is the equal of today's small in town metro cars, and it is likely
a whole lot more fun to drive too! After all, over 21,559,463 Beetle's were built and
that says something!
