1980s Commercials as Remembered from a 1980s Child

Andrea Rowe
During a recent trip through YouTube, I encountered commercials I missed as a child in 1980. Some of these commercials were familiar while others were not. When I asked my husband about a memorable 1980's commercial his response mentioned "this is your egg, this is brain on drugs, any questions?" He also mentioned the commercial when the son says he learned to smoke pot from watching his dad. These two commercials and several others aimed at scaring our generation away from drugs are some of the most memorable to me. If you need a link to remember the commercials I am speaking of here you go.

PSA sponsored anti-drug commercials can hardly be considered the best kids commercials from the 1980s. I placed these here because they were so popular most who were of any age in the 1980s remembers them.

Now, the specifically geared to kids' commercials from when life was so much similar then-the 1980s are to be presented.

This poor little leprechaun was always trying to get his Lucky Charms cereal. Here is one where he almost got away with it, but not quite. I believe this is a 1980s commercial but it is possible it is from the early 1990s youtube.com

Another rabbit tried to make off with the Trix cereal. Here is a 1980s commercial of him trying to do that. youtube.com

I had to include this Toys R Us commercial because so many future stars are in it including Jenny Lewis, Jaleel White, and Lindsay Price. What 1980s child does not remember the slogan "I don't want to grow up because if I did, I wouldn't be a toys are us kid?" youtube.com

It is possible this commercial is from the early 1990s. I remember it as a child though. It contains the McDonald's "Do you believe in magic?" slogan. McDonald commercials fascinated me as a child because our town did not have one until 1986. youtube.com

A word of caution before watching this next McDonald's commercial. It was filmed not long after the fast food place opened and the Ronald McDonald then looks a little different from now. youtube.com

The most frightening commercial I remember as a child in the 1980s is Kinder Surprise, a toy that contained a chocolate egg that held a toy inside. As a parent, it does not look very safe. It is funny how your perspective changes when you become a parent. youtube.com

I remember this 1980s commercial because I desperately wanted one and my parents couldn't afford it. My husband had a My Buddy doll though. youtube.com

My final commercial that was memorable to the 1980s was Cabbage Patch Kids dolls with Corn Silk Hair. The hair would mat if you tried to wash it so I did not play with her too much. I loved her though. Her name was Cornelia. youtube.com

By 1980 I was 21. But I remember those ads.

So clearly effective! No one who was a child in the 1980s did drugs.
