1991-1997 BMW 8-Series: A Future Classic Worth a Look at Now

For decades, BMW has been
exclaiming that its automobiles
are the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'
Car enthusiasts have generally
not had a problem with the
statement as it has been pretty
much spot on!

One ultimate driving machine
that is moving toward being a
classic is the 1991-1997 BMW
8-Series
. This is the automaker's
larger two door coupe.

The 8-Series measured five

inches wider and one-half inch lower than the 6-Series of the time. And its long hood
and close coupe 2+2 cabin offered an impressive drag coefficient of 0.29, impressive
even by today's standards. The car's balanced weight distribution resulted in good
handling and long distance cruising ability.

This 8-Series was equipped with amenities such as a 12 speaker stereo, stability
control, seat anchored belts, and a smooth running 296 hp, 5.0-liter 12-cylinder.
Because the car was solid weighting in at over 4100 lbs., the 0-60 time was 7.4
seconds when equipped with a 4-speed automatic or 0-60 in 6.7 seconds in the
rare 6-speed manual transmission.

In 1994, an 840Ci become available equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 making 282 hp
and it was combined with a close ratio 5-speed automatic that matched the 850i
(12-cylinder engine) performance. Additionally, the cost of the 840Ci was $18,000
less. Furthermore, the regular grade 850CSi eventually received a horsepower increase
to 322 hp.

Also, there was a limited-production 850CSi priced at $100,000. It was equipped
with a bored and stroked 5.5-liter V8 (making 372 hp). It came with sport suspension
and wider M wheels.

Even with the heavy breathing version, the car was never associated as being a hot
rod. Rather, it was seen as a quick and capable grand touring machine.

With its high initial price, low production numbers, and its timeless good looking
design, the BMW 8-Series is on track to become a collectable classic.
Why consider the car now before it gains full classic status? Because you can buy

The average price across the country for a V8 (and surprisingly even a V12) with
just over 100,000 miles on the clock is $14,900.
