Saturday March 28th at 9:30am on a rainy morning South Street Elementary students and their mothers attended a special viewing of Monsters Vs. Aliens at Cinema World Fitchburg. This showing was to kick of the First Annual Mother Son Movie Morning and a better movie could not have been selected. Just the right mixture of silliness and message to keep the kids laughing and the moms secure that the entertainment wasn't mindless fun.

With so much emphasis surrounding Daddy Daughter dances, Father Son outings and Mother Daughter fashion shows this new tradition was welcomed with open arms by the boys and there moms. Lending to them time to just be together as friends. The laughter roared through the theater while the memorable characters flooded the screen. With splendid colors and quick-witted banter the moms appeared more than happy to spend this morning feeding their kids popcorn and soda and just letting go a bit.

Frame after frame there were messages of the dangers of judging a book by its cover and the follies of ignorance in society. One mother commented, "I didn't expect the movie to be so funny and educational at the same time. And I think it is cool that they had Reese Witherspoon's character (Susan) realize that sometimes the people you think really care about you, don't when it matters." An interesting observation, which could spark, in depth conversation in the car or at home with the whole family. Which seemed to be the theme of the day communication.

The message of individuality and solid friendship was one that these students understood. A kindergarten student commented to his mother while walking out of the theater, " Mom that movie was so great. But if that cockroach was the smartest scientist in the world then how come he couldn't change himself back to a person again." The mom said, " Because sometimes even the smartest people in the world make mistakes they cant take back." A deep and relevant message for today's society that children often find out in more emotionally devastating situations.

Hand in hand the satisfied teams of mothers and sons exited the theater with so many different conversations accumulating, one might think they were in the center of a think tank. Children's minds stimulated and mothers ready with thought out explanations bridged otherwise ignored issues and made them known. There is no question that this new custom will carry on strong for many years to come for South Street Elementary and the scores of students that inhabit their halls.
