1st Birthday Party Games for Kids

Kelly Spies
A successful 1st birthday party takes more than a few balloons, some cake and ice cream. Even though a child's 1st birthday party is usually reserved for family the party still needs a few good games to make it worth the while. Here are a few party games perfect for a 1st birthday party.

Word of Advice; the following games should be conducted with adult supervision and participation.

Bubbles - Babies love bubbles and so they are excellent for celebrating a 1st birthday. Simply provide the adult at the party with bubbles and encourage them to blow, blow blow. You can take this a step further by creating a bubble pool for the toddlers to blow their own bubbles. Simply fill a child's blow up swimming pool with soapy water and give them plastic flyswatters. Let the babies dip their swatters in the pool and wave them around. You can also purchase a bubble machine to make things even simpler.

Ring around the Rosie - It may be an old game but children never tire of it. Don't be afraid to be silly, let yourself enjoy the game and the children at the birthday party will have just as much fun.

Dancing - Who said 1st birthday parties have to be an expensive affair? When it comes to babies and toddlers simple is best and nothing is more simple than dancing. Load up a CD player with all your child's favorite tunes and let them dance the day away.

Blanket Rides - Blanket rides is both an indoor and outdoor activity. Spread out your oldest blanket on the floor, pile on the babies and pull them a short distance. Be careful not to pull too hard or too fast. Let laughter ensue.

Balloon Volleyball - Blow up one large balloon. Gather the babies around you and bounce the balloon to them. Show them how to hit the balloon so that it bounces into the air for another child to hit. This is a fantastic way to begin teaching your toddler what it means to take turns under the guise of fun.

Baby Piñatas - As crazy as it sounds there are piñatas specially made for toddlers. Instead of hitting the piñata, the babies only need to pull a string. Baby piñatas can be purchased at most grocery stores or can be ordered at party supply websites online.

A baby's 1st birthday party might be the most memorable one for parents but keep in mind that the birthday boy or girl will never remember the event so be flexible enough to do away with a pre-planned party game. Also, please be safe. Toddlers should never be left alone with balloons or bubbles and all games should include the adults at the party.

Recently I took my son to a first birthday party where they put up a tv that played a musical show made from digital pictures of their child's first year. The video had a storyline showing the baby grow up from a newborn to the first tooth, first smile, first crawl etc and everything was beautifully choreographed to music with special effects and a personalized Happy Birthday song! They had got it done from Smilingsnaps.com and it was so touching- I had never seen anything like that before! I am planning to do something similar for my kid's upcoming birthday- not only will it be fun in the party, but the DVD will be a permanent keepsake which my son would love to see when he grows up. Hope this helps.
