2 Children Are Dead: Cobb County Police Search for Hit & Run Driver

Austell Rd Hit & Run: Witnesses Say "He Stopped, Looked, & Then Left."

Amy Barnes
MARIETTA, Ga - At approximately 9pm on Saturday, April 10th, several people attempted to cross Austell Road at the bus stops near Sandtown Road. Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that a black male in a tan vehicle drove down the road, moved into the left lane, injured a mother and killed her two children by hitting into them, and then fled the scene after stopping briefly to look around. One witness claimed that the driver ran over the four-year-old boy and struck (and killed) the 18-month-old baby and hit the mother. One child was unharmed. A witness stated that the mother was in a hurry to get across the street in order not to anger someone who was waiting for her to arrive somewhere.

First responders tried repeatedly to revive the child. A breathing tube was seen inserted and CPR was performed for for several minutes as ambulances, fire trucks, and several police officers raced to the area.

Emergency services were delayed for some minutes by traffic locked into the road by both the accident scene and road dividers that were installed where a median lane used to exist. The drivers of the ambulances & fire trucks were seen honking the horns to urge drivers to move, but no one could move out of the way. Emergency services were forced to use the opposite side of the road after a few minutes' delay.

The mother, in her grief, struck and slapped a person trying to console her. Several police officers and several bystanders attempted to persuade the grieving mother to get out of the road. The mother was seen screaming and laying down, crying for her children.

"I was just coming home from work and offered to help, but there was nothing I could do. This is the worst hing that I have ever seen." Amy Barnes, the author, spoke to reporters at the scene. "The mother grabbed my arms and started screaming into my face. Her face was wild with grief. I watched as they tried to save the boy, and for a while we thought he might have made it. We prayed and prayed and they kept trying to save him, but he just never woke up."

As of publication time, it is unknown as to whether or not the Cobb County Police Department has located the suspect.

A witness had the following to say: Don't cross the street in a rush; make sure that the road is safe. Several residents from a nearby apartment complex have reported that other people have been killed in the same area from getting hit by vehicles while attempting to cross the street.
