Maybe it makes perfect sense, then, that I've been obsessed with making hats just about as long as I've realized I could make them.
This crochet pattern will create a two-color cap that dips very slightly into a point at the back, above which a flower or other accessory can be attached. I've included instructions for basic sizing - sizes from preemie through child's 4-6 are created easily with simple adjustments noted below.
2 Color Crochet Cap
Sizing Notes - A huge variety of sizes can be achieved using this crochet pattern, simply by changing the size of yarn and/or needle you use.
Basic Sizing Guidelines:
G Hook & Worsted Weight Yarn = 6-12 month hat
G Hook & Fingering or Baby Weight Yarn = Newborn hat
F Hook & Worsted Weight Yarn = Newborn hat
F Hook & Fingering or Baby Weight Yarn = Preemie hat
Notes are given in parenthesis below for toddler and child-size versions of this hat.
Cap:
Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, 2 double crochets in same stitch as joining. 3 double crochets in each stitch around (9 dc). Join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch as joining, 2 double crochets in each dc around (18 dc). Join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 3.
(For toddler size cap, repeat round 2 once. For child size 4-6 repeat round 2 once and round 3 once.)
Round 3: Ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch as joining. 2 double crochets in each double crochet around (36 dc). Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3.
Round 4: Ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch as joining. *1 double crochet in each of next 3 doubles, 2 double crochets in next double* repeat around. Join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 3.
Rounds 5-7: Ch 3, double crochet in each double crochet around. Join with slip stitch to top of beg ch 3.
(For child size 4-6 repeat round 7 once.)
Round 8: Do not chain. Half-double crochet in same stitch as joining and in each stitch around. Join to first half-double crochet with slip stitch. Finish off, leaving a tail to work under round 9.
Round 9: Attach contrast color with slip stitch to last slip stitch made. Do not chain. Half-double crochet in same stitch as joining, and in each stitch around. Join with slip stitch to first half-double crochet.
Rounds 10-11: Do not chain. Single crochet in same stitch as joining and in each stitch around. Join with slip stitch.
Round 12: Slip stitch in each stitch around. Finish off, weaving in end.
Quick Cap Flower
Chain 3, join with slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: In ring, work *double crochet, triple crochet, double crochet, slip stitch*. Repeat 4 times (5 petals made).
Round 2: Slip stitch in each stitch around. Finish off, leaving tail for attaching to cap.
Attach to cap just above the "point".
