2 Dead After Detasseling Accident

ROCK FALLS, ILLINOIS - It's summer in the Midwest and it is a common site. That site is detasseling and a great way for school kids to make good money while on break.
With that comes a way to get a tan, work with friends, but, at times, reality hits and the danger of doing this work strikes.
As it did near here in Tampico, a small village in Whiteside County. On Monday (July 25), 2 were electrocuted and died after getting shocked when they made contact with a farm irrigator. They were working for Monsanto. It has rained over the weekend pretty hard in Whiteside County, and thus, standing water filled many area field when they came to work today (July 25). Two others also came in contact, but are not reported to have died. In all 72 workers filled this field today. Meanwhile, it has also been said that in some cases, the detasseling work is behind schedule.
As of now, eight are injured as a result of this accident. The location of the field is Luther Road south of Starr Road, near Tampico.
Some of the detasselers were taken to the Rock Falls Fire Department for evaluation while and then area hospitals. One was flown to Rockford.
More information has the detasselers as students from Morrison, Sterling and Rock Falls high schools.
NOTE: Counselors will also be on hand from 10 a.m. to noon at the Sterling High School library, at Rock Falls High School and at Morrison High School.
OSHA is investigated. Due to the age of the workers killed, names will not be released. And, no matter what, they will not be released here.
* In a related note, a detasseler went missing during one of the heat-filled days and has not been seen since. He was last seen during a water break.
