2 Easy Crafts for Kids - Googly-eye Creatures and Puzzle Picture Frames

Agnes Farside
Children love making things. They love to color pictures, draw, glue objects together, and cut paper. Give them a few Popsicle sticks, some glue, and the next thing you know they have built a small house. Give them some rocks, puzzle pieces and a little adult help and they can create googly-eye creatures and unique puzzle picture frames to house their masterpiece drawings or favorite photo.

Googly-eye Creatures

To make googly-eye creatures you will need the following:

-Several round, flat, smooth stones about half-dollar size
-Several googly eyes (can be found in craft stores), appropriately sized to fit stones
-Craft glue
-Assortment of craft paint and paintbrushes (optional)

First, clean and dry the stones. Next have the child glue the googly eyes on stones. These can be used as a paperweight on an office desk, to set inside a potted plant as a decoration or given as gifts to a friend or family member. The stones can also be painted to resemble silly creatures such as red ladybugs or small green frogs. You can also glue several different sized stones on top of each other and make more silly googly-eyed creatures.

Puzzle Picture Frame

To make a puzzle picture frame you will need the following:

-Old small puzzle pieces (number needed will depend on size of picture frame)
-Wooden picture frame (any size)
-Craft glue
-Assortment of craft paints and paintbrushes
NOTE: Yards sales and secondhand shops are a good place to find old puzzles.

First, have the child paint all the puzzle pieces and let them dry for approximately 24 hours. While the puzzle pieces are drying, either paint or stain the wood frame (an adult may want to do this). After all paint has dried, let the child glue the puzzle pieces onto the wooden frame in a random order. After all pieces have been applied, let the picture frame dry for another 24 hours. After that, the child can then place their drawing or photo in the frame.

My daughter & I just came in from a walk..where she was pointing out small igneous & metamorphic rocks or some stuff like that..I swear at times I certainly am not smarter than a fifth-grader ;-) She would enjoy gathering some of the smoother stones we found for the googly-eye creatures..this wonderful craft piece teaches us.
