2 Steps to Make the Most of Your Small Closet

Sass Ashe
The result of an overcrowded, unorganized closet is wrinkled clothing, piles of unmatched shoes, and accesories strewn about.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to find a complete ensemble in less than 10 minutes?

Two essential things are all you have to do to fit all of your stuff in a small closet,. Not just shoved in, but in a way that you can find everything in just a few seconds, instead of feeling like you are taking on an obstacle course just to put together an outfit for the day.

Discard

Objectively go through your wardrobe and remove the items that you don't need. In other words if you have a really great pair of stiletto heeled pumps in a bright color, that you have never worn but keep just because you got them for a great price, get them out of your closet.

If there are items that you haven't worn in more than a year or that you are holding on to until you lose weight, get rid of them. With a small closet you only have room for the items you actually use.

All the items that go into your discard pile can be designated for a yard sale, eBay, or donated to your church or local Goodwill. Even if you don't or can't wear them someone will appreciate your discarded clothing and accessories.

Organize

After you have thinned the herd so to speak, you need to organize. The best way I have found is using the clothes hangers that also have the hanging rack attached for pants and skirts. This way you can put an entire outfit on one hanger. Blouse, Jacket, Pants and the belt buckle hangs on the hook.

Or you may be interested in space saving hangers that can hold up to 5 pairs of pants each. You can find these at www.spacesavers.com, for around $4 each.

For all items that you can't or don't want to hang, you can install some shelving on the inside of your closet door, and also some hanging hooks for purses.

Shoes were always the biggest challenge for me because I have way too many shoes for a tiny little closet.

The solution is clear shoebox sized containers. Put one pair in each container, and stack them neatly all across the floor of the closet. You can stack them on top of each other, and will be able to see at a glance which pair is inside.

Keeping your stuff neatly in a small closet doesn't require a lot of money, or a lot of time, and once it is all organized, you will be surprised at how much space your tiny closet really has. Now you can go out and buy more clothes to replace the ones that you removed from the closet!

See, you didn't think that cleaning and organizing your tiny closet would earn you a shopping spree did you?

Great advice....but ughhhhhhhhhhhh I hate to buy storage containers. I just feel wrong about it. I have all of my shoes neatly stacked in the original boxes and search through them every season. I know clear shoe boxes would make my life easier ....but I just hate the thought of spending money on replacement shoes boxes!

Using clear boxes for shoes is a great idea! Mine are all currently in a huge pile.

Yes, if we could just get rid of the stuff we don't wear, we'd save a bundle of space!

Those thin hangers really make a difference too.

P.S. When we sell our house, I'm not calling it a closet but I don't know what to call it. It is too big to be a nook or cranny but not deep enough to even hold coats properly, hung on hooks.

Thanks! We have one very small closet. I can't even believe the former homeowners had the nerve to call it a closet!
