20 Great Songs with People's Names in the Title
There Are Hundreds of Name Title Songs but These Are My Favorites
#20-"Stan" by Eminem featuring Dido. This song came out in 2000 and is a thought provoking hip-hop song.
#19-"Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's. This catchy tune was released in 2005 but didn't become a hit until 2007.
#18-"Lola" by The Kinks. Lola was my grandma's name and the song is classic Kinks. It was released 40 years ago!
#17-"Jaime's Cryin" by Van Halen. A hit in 1978 that I still enjoy hearing on classic rock stations.
#16-"Amanda" by Boston. In 1986 Boston made every girl named Amanda a star with this romantic tune.
#15-"Daniel" by Elton John. This 1973 song reminds me of both of my cousins named Daniel who died too young.
#14-"Jack and Diane" by John Cougar Mellencamp. Back in 1982 this singer was simply known as John Cougar when he released this popular song.
#13-"Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks. To really appreciate this 1999 song about an abusive man getting what he deserves, you have to see the video!
#12-"Come on Eileen" by Dexies Midnight Runners. This was one of the top 20 songs of the 80s.
#11-"Tomorrow Wendy" by Concrete Blonde. Another 80s song, but this was the sad story of a young woman with AIDS who decides to take her own life.
#10-"Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson. This 1983 song by MJ won a Grammy award. It was Michael's year as he had another big hit in '83, "Beat It".
#9-"My Sharona" by The Knack. I wasn't familiar with this 1979 song until it became a hit on the Reality Bites soundtrack 15 years later.
#8-"Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield. #1 hit song in 1981 for the guy that was then known as Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital.
#7-"867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone. In 1982 Tommy Tutone gave us a phone number that no one will forget.
#6-"Sara" by Jefferson Starship. This was a top billboard song in 1986 and still one of the best "name title" songs ever.
#5-"Joey" by Concrete Blonde. Another Concrete Blonde song from their awesome album, Bloodletting scored high praise in 1990 when it hit the airwaves.
#4-"Maggie May" by Rod Stewart. Everyone knows this 1971 song. I became a fan of it and Rod back in high school in the 80s.
#3-"Beth" by KISS. When I was a child in the 70s I loved KISS and especially the drummer, Peter Criss. When Peter was allowed to put down the sticks and sing, he sang about Beth. At age 6, I walked around singing this song and I still do today.
#2-"Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry. In 1984 this song came out and was all over MTV. I happened to be attending the same Jr. High School that Steve Perry attended years before and I endured a year of kids singing this song to me to annoy me. Now this Sherri truly appreciates the song, but not enough to make it my #1 pick.
#1-"Roxanne" by The Police. In 1978 The Police sang, "Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light". I became a big fan of the song in the 80s and finally figured out it was a song about a prostitute. Despite the topic of the song, it is my favorite on this particular list. I still crank it up and annihilate the song by my attempts at singing it when I hear it on the radio.

One of my favorites with a name in the title is 'Alison' by Elvis Costello. My aim is true.
Just making a few page view visits to wish you a Happy New Year! rcj
Excellent work! Happy Holidays =0)
Nice list! I've got "Ave Maria," "Maria" (from "Westside Story"), and that song from "The Sound of Music"--"How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" :) Oh, and that "Maria" song that came out the year I was married.
Sadly I'll I got was "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte." UGH!
Yeah Karen, the song "Michelle" has a special place in my heart--it just didn't make it to my top 20:)
Some of these take me way back. Maggie May is still popular today. I went to a Rod Stewart concert and when he sang that song, just about everyone stood up and sang along. Here's another one to add - Michelle by the Beatles. Paul McCartney recently sang it to Michelle Obama.
I love #19. Stay open sister
Great article, thanks for sharing!
Great list, a lot of songs sound like they could be saying "Anne" if you don't listen too closely, of course that old fee-fi-fo-fanna naming song covers just about everybody
