In the Victorian times there was a difference between the names of upper class and lower class families. Some more popular names for upper class females were Ada, Beatrice and Dorothy. For males more popular upper class names were Frederick, Samuel and Cyril. Some of the more popular upper class Victorian names became popular in the 20th century, whereas the popular lower class names began to disappear.
From 1867 - 1886 there were about 51500 brides registered. Of these brides there were 424 different names, the top ten names accounting for 59% of the total. For registered grooms, the top ten names accounted for 72% of the total.
A lot of nicknames made their debut during the Victorian times. These names include Hattie (Harriet), Bessie (Elizabeth) and Lottie (Charlotte).
Victorian name can be very uncommon in modern times but they can also be very dated, especially female names. They are often accociated with the elderly since these names have fallen out of favour whereas much of the elderly have names which were popular in the Victorian era and beginning of the 20th century. However, some names are almost completely unheard of at present and so can be used without seeming dated and may appear very unique and beautiful.
There are a few Victorian names which are making a comback in modern times. These include Aligail, Hannah and Lily.
