2005's King Kong: The Eighth Wonder of the World

Throughout the years, there have been several movies featuring Kong - some good, some bad, and some downright ugly. At first, I was a little skeptical as to how much I would like King Kong (the remake) since the original is one of my favorite movies of all time and one of the first movies I can remember watching as a child.

After seeing the trailer on the Internet, I could not wait for the theatrical release. In fact, I watch the trailer so many times, that I was afraid the movie could not live up to the hype that I was building up in my own mind. What concerned me the most was how long the movie was. At 3 hours and 10 minutes, I was afraid the movie might drag throughout. Secondly, with the cast I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not a real big fan of Adrien Brody and Jack Black has done mostly teen comedies so I wasn't sure at the direction that Peter Jackson was aiming for.

As for my first concern, the length of the movie wasn't actually that bad - it does start out really slow but it builds a really solid base.

As for my point of view, it seemed like the first part of the movie was meant for character development. The first part of the movie provides a great understanding of why the characters are willing to go to the lengths that they are to have something salvageable from their voyage. It did start to seem a little drawn-out and start to drag during the voyage to Skull Island but, once they arrive on the Island, it is a two-hour non-stop action packed thrill ride.

And for my second concern which was the cast, I thought they did a great job considering they had to act at is special effects throughout the majority of the movie and, although I would not have thought of Jack Black for the role of Carl Denham, he did a superb job. Even Adrien Brody who I'm not a huge fan of did a great job but the best performance had to be by Naomi Watts, who played Ann Darrow. She spends the most time with Kong so most of her acting is to a stunt man who was the stand-in for Kong. With all that being said, it's still not the main attraction in King Kong.

The main attraction is obviously the special effects which are jaw-dropping. I've heard people say that besides the special effect of King Kong, the rest were not that good. In my opinion, that is absolutely false. There would need to be a new word invented to describe how well the special effects are done - spectacular, masterpiece, and brilliant don't do it justice.

My only concern after watching the movie is the target audience. Without a doubt it's a fantastic movie but for the 200 million-dollar budget it might not make enough money to be considered a success. Still, I personally loved the movie, and whether or not it makes a profit or just barely breaks even, I consider it a huge success.I would also like to thank Peter Jackson for not ruining a true classic and that's why I give King Kong 4/5 stars.

  • The length of the movie wasn't actually that bad
  • I enjoyed the hour and a half's worth of character development.
  • The special effects were the best I have ever seen.
On April Fools Day 2005, Peter Jackson posted an elaborate practical joke, which he posted on a web diary at www.kongisking.net.

I loved this movie! I liked the original as well. And I can tolerate the version with Jessica Lange (okay, there is no accounting for taste, I know). But this one was my favorite for sure!
