Between Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and the Poconos, there are many opportunities to attend events with great pyrotechnic shows. Although there are events the entire week of Independence Day, this guide highlights events specifically on the Fourth of July.
Scranton: PNC Field
This author can remember attending fireworks displays at this location when the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees were still the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) and back when PNC Field was simply called "Lackawanna County Stadium". Regardless of the naming (and affiliation!) changes, this is still the premier spot in the region for Fourth of July Fireworks. In 2007, the doubleheader of game against the Pawtucket Red Sox will begin at 5:30 PM. If you aren't attending the game, you will need to arrive at Montage Mountain no later than 9:00 PM to view the fireworks display. There are several ideal viewing areas for fireworks on Montage Mountain. You can park along I-81 near the Montage Mountain Road exit, park in the Industrial Park above the stadium, relax in the Cinemark Theatre parking lot or even park at the top of the mountain near the ski resort. Beware crowds - this is a popular event, and parking and driving conditions may be very congested. For more information, see web.minorleaguebaseball.com.
Hawley: Lake Wallenpaupack
Nothing beats fireworks over one of the most scenic lakes in the Poconos region. Lake Wallenpaupack has been enjoyed by Pennsylvania natives and tourist for decades. The 2007 fireworks display will begin at around 9:15 PM, and the actual pyrotechnics will be set off from a lot next to Wallenpaupack High School. If you know this lake, you know that there is no bad vantage point, and you can even watch the fireworks on a boat on the lake itself. One viewing location this author has used in the past is the parking areas along the east side of the lake, along routes 507 and 390. There are large flat rocks along the lakefront that are ideal seating areas for the display. Parking is also available on the other side of the lake at the high school. Arrive early and park safely without obstructing any roadways, and you and your family will enjoy a great event! For more information, see http://www.hawleywallenpaupackcc.com/fireworks.htm.
Wilkes-Barre: Kirby Park
Families enjoy Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre throughout the year, but it is especially popular on the Fourth of July. In 2007, events will last throughout the day, and are free to all attendees. These events include a car show and musical performances, before fireworks kick off at night, at the conclusion of the North Eastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic show featuring Empire Brass. The Philharmonic concert, presented free of charge, will begin at 7:30 PM. This concert will feature patriotic tunes and family favorites.
