2007's Top Ten Boxers, Pound-for-Pound

WriterzBlock
Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Welterweight - 147lbs

(37-0 24KOs)

WBC Welterweight champion.

Mayweather, 29, is without a doubt the most impressive and talented fighter of this era. Floyd has defeated every fighter that fans and media writers have considered a legitimate challenge. Unfortunately, he still receives a boatload of criticisms despite the fact that his victories are so one-sided. With a recent blowout victory over the much over-hyped Carlos Baldomir in November, Mayweather is at the top of the fight chain.

On May 5th, 2007 he faces WBC 154lb champion Oscar De La Hoya. If Floyd can get through Oscar he'll go down as one of the games best, hands down!

Manny Pacquiao

Super featherweight - 130lbs

(43-3-2 34KOs)

WBC Intercontinental champion

Manny Pacquiao is a sensational force at 130lbs. He's squashed virtually every opponent to cross his path with exception of two defeats early in his career. In 2005 Erik Morales defeated him in an encounter closely labeled to fight of the year. Despite the loss, in the same year he successfully defeated Morales in a rematch via knockout in the tenth on January 21, 2006. On November 18, 2006, once again he showcased his talent by defeating Erik Morales in a rubber match inside of three rounds. The Philippine dreamer, Pacquiao is an exciting, powerful and explosive fighter at 130lbs.

Winky Wright

Middleweight - 160lbs

(51-3-1 25KOs)

Ronald Winky Wright is somewhat a replica of a modern day Marvin Hagler. If it wasn't for the suspect scoring in his bout with Jermain Taylor on June 17, 2006, he would be the Undisputed Middleweight champion right now. Recently, on December 2, 2006 he went to war with a game Ike Quartey, dropping him twice (once legitimately) and picking up a landslide unanimous decision victory.

Jermain Taylor

Middleweight - 160lbs

(26-0-1 17KOs)

Undisputed Middleweight Champion

Jermain deserves all the credit in the world. He's had some of the toughest challenges to date in his career thus far. It doesn't get any easier: Two tough fights with Bernard Hopkins, one extremely tough and close fight against Winky Wright and Kassim Ouma. Four close encounters in a row and Taylor is still champion. Despite harsh criticisms, face the facts, Jermain is champion and still remains undefeated.

Rafael Marquez

Bantamweight - 118lbs

(36-3 32KOs)

IBF & IBO Bantamweight champion

He's gone undefeated in seven years and has racked impressive victories at 118lbs. Marquez has defeated 14 opponents since, then 10 by knockout including two victories over Silence Mabuza.

Bernard Hopkins

Light heavyweight - 175lbs.

(47-4-1 32KOs)

IBO Light heavyweight champion

The victory over Antonio Tarver last June put Hopkins' back in the major playoff picture. He thoroughly dominated a supreme talent in Tarver, capturing IBO recognition and lopsided scores of 118-109 by all three judges. After losing back to back to Jermain Taylor he took one of the worst possible threats by advancing 15lbs and destroying the best at 175lbs.

Joe Calzaghe

Super Middleweight - 168lbs

(42-0 31KOs)

WBO Super Middleweight champion.

Undefeated and extremely talented, the pride of Wales has been a new hit since his blowout performance over Jeff Lacy in March 2006. Since then, he's been the talk of the town and deserves a spot amongst the top ten fighters in the sport today. Calzaghe has power, quick hands and an impressive resume to back his 19 successful title defenses.

Marco Antonio Barrera

Super featherweight - 130lbs.

(63-4-2 42KOs)

WBC Super featherweight champion

2007 will be Barrera's last year in the ring. His two recent victories over Rocky Juarez in addition with his ring longevity keeps him amongst the rankings. On March 17, 2007 he faces a tough fighter in Juan Manuel Marquez. This is a matchup that could possibly be his last; Barrera will go out with a bang!

Juan Manuel Marquez

Featherweight - 126lbs

(46-3-1 35KOs)

WBO Featherweight champion

He's just coming off of a hard fought victory over Jimrex Jaca in Texas. On March 17, 2007 he'll move up four pounds north and take on WBC Super featherweight champion, Marco Antonio Barrera.

Ricky Hatton

Junior Welterweight - 140lbs

(41-0 30KOs)

Hatton is another sensation out of England looking to continue to market his growth here in the states. On January 20, 2007 he faces undefeated Juan Urango for his old IBF 140lb world title.

boxrec.com needs to overhaul its website, as evidenced by his remarkable and astonishing feats (butchering a good many prized latino fighters), manny pacquiao should be acclaimed the top pound for pound boxer in the world, not the unknown calzaghe.
