2008 Summer Olympics Preview: Women's Tennis

Lee Andrew Henderson
Over the past few years I have become a big fan of tennis. Since I'm pretty new to being a tennis fan I've never followed tennis in the Summer Olympics. This year I'll be following all the tennis matches on the men's side and women's side. Here is a preview of women's tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

When does tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics start?
The tennis events at the 2008 Olympics will begin on August 10th and conclude on August 17th. Those attending the 2008 Summer Olympics can find tennis at the Olympic Green Tennis Center in Beijing.

Which women's singles will be representing the USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics?
The United States will be represented by both Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Venus and Serena Williams are currently ranked 6th and 7th in the world and recently played each other in the Wimbledon Finals. The Williams sisters will also be joined by Lindsay Davenport in women's singles competition.

Which women's doubles will be representing the USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics?
All three of Team USA's singles competitors will also compete in doubles at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Williams sisters will be doubles teammates together and Lindsay Davenport will team with Liezel Huber.

Who will be the toughest competition in women's singles tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics?
Women's singles at the Summer Olympics should be very close between Serbia, Russia and the United States. Serbia has the two highest ranked women's singles players, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic. Ivanovic and Jankovic have been two of the hottest female tennis players for the past year and they look to be straong candidates for the world's highest ranked tennis player.

The Russians have the best crop of women's tennis players. Even with their best player, Maria Sharapova, injured Russia still has the next two highest ranked players at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva and also #9 Dinara Safina.

Who will be the toughest competition in women's doubles tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics?
The toughest women's doubles teams at the 2008 Summer Olympics will probably be Ai Sugiyama and Ayumi Morita of Japan, Rennae Stubbs and Samantha Stosur or Australia and Chuang Chia-Jung and Chan Yung-Jian of Chinese Taipei.
