As we predicted in the season preview, the Tennessee Volunteers are leading the way so far. Georgia has been the most disappointing team to date this season. Led by J.P. Prince, Tyler Smith, and Wayne Chism, the Vols have some big non-conference games remaining against Kansas, Gonzaga, and Memphis and are the clear favorite to win the conference to date. Kentucky and Florida are playing well, but not strong enough to be ranked yet this season. The most disappointing team so far in the East has been the Georgia Bulldogs who have lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at home as well as a previous losses to Savanna State and Loyola of Illinois. As we get into conference play after the New Year, we'll be keeping an eye on the Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson led Wildcats and the Nick Calathes led Florida Gators.
SEC East Division Standings As of 25 December 2008:
SEC - East
South Carolina 9-1
Florida 9-2
Tennessee 8-2
Kentucky 9-3
Vanderbilt 9-3
Georgia 7-4
Since we previewed the West earlier in the season, Ole Miss has lost their lead guard, Chris Warren but have pulled out a solid 8-4 record so far this season. LSU and Arkansas have been leading the way in the West though they haven't really been challenged yet this season. Mississippi State has come in at a disappointing 8-4 record so far this season and the jury is still out on the Crimson Tide! Arkansas freshman guard, Courtney Fortson, has exceeded expectations this season to-date with averaging 15.7 points, 6.5 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game. It should be interesting to see how the West shapes up as we move through the January conference schedule.
SEC West Division Standings As of 25 December 2008:
LSU 9-1
Arkansas 8-1
Alabama 7-3
Mississippi 8-4

Tennessee is the only ranked school? What is going on down there? What happened to Florida? Is Billy Donavan a one-hit wonder? Maybe he should have taken the money and bolted to Orlando. He will never get an NBA offer now.
