Parents give their babies certain names for certain reasons. It may be the name of an ancestral relative, a name of a favorite person famous or otherwise, or as I said for whatever reason they feel. It is been known that some parents tend to follow current trends when naming their children. For instance when departed songstress Aaliyah surfaced on the music scene with hits in the 1990's, the name skyrocketed as one of the top African American baby names. It's distinctively African sound and spelling attracted many parents as id its meaning. Some popular African-American baby names have come to be associated with famous leaders, entertainers, and the likes of present and past. Here is a list of popular African American baby names of the past years, as well as those that are sure to surface in 2009.

Aaliyah: African name, with Hebrew variation spelled Aliyah, means to ascend, to rise up.

Ameena: Swahili name meaning Trustworthy. It has various spelling including Amina, Amena, etc...

Ada: meaning first Daughter (Nigerian Igbo's), in Hebrew, it means beautiful, adorn, and in English, it means prosperous and happy. Spelling variations include Adah.

Chidi: Nigerian name given to both baby boys and girls. It means God exists.

Denisha: African female name meaning Wild.

Imani; means Faith, given to both male and female

Maalik: male name meaning Experience

Naima: female name meaning Graceful

Rashidi: Swahili male name meaning Thinker, Counselor. Various spelling includes Rasheed.

Barack: It is the name of our future president, who happened to be of African ancestry.

Barack means Blessed, and it has several spelling variation including Barak, and Barrack.

Sasha: Although Sasha is not of African origin, watch out for this name to appear on the list as it is the name of Obama's little girl.

Malia: Hawaiian name meaning Mary or Beloved. It also means calm and peaceful. It is the name of Obama's first daughter and is likely to make it to the list.

Michelle: Michelle is already a popular name in America and around the world. It is likely to continue its popularity in honor of our future first lady Michelle Obama.
