2009 BMW M3 Review

Can it Get Any Better?

In the past, if you wanted to go everywhere fast, but couldn't afford a Lamborghini, the M3 was an obvious choice. Well, it still is. There is competition from Mercedes and Audi but Mercedes and Audi haven't been building a sports saloon nearly as long as the M3 has been in production, so BMW has had plenty of time to hone the M3, to give us the 2009 BMW M3.

Let's talk some figures - V8 engine producing 420 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. First question that pops up is if it's got 420 hp, why just under 300 torques? Usually the torque figure is really close to the horsepower, but not in the M3. Well, there's a good reason for that. You see, the torque maxes out at 3,900 RPM, so there's plenty of it! You'd think there isn't much, but if you have 295 angry torques maxing out at 3,900 RPM, the engine will love to rev. You'll have 295 torques drop-kicking your liver a mile back, and you'll have 420 horsepowers to keep you revving up to 8,300 RPM! 8,300 RPM from a 4.0 V8? That's absolutely fantastic!

Another really cool thing about the M3 is now there's a sedan version of the angry beast. The four-door sports saloon has nearly identical performance figures. So that means now you can crush Mercedes and Audi with your kids in the back.

Here's one of the greatest things about the M3 though. It manages to be sharp, precise, poised, and comfortable! The Audi RS4 is fast, really fast, sporty, but it's a bit hard. The Mercedes C-Class AMG has much more power, but can't put its power down. And though there's more room, there's also more weight, and while the BMW is going to kick you into a corner in massive comfort, the Mercedes will slide you around it and through daggers at you while at it. It was once described as an ax-murderer with headlights. I can see absolutely why. It has so much power, the tires can't put it on the road. So all you end up doing is going everywhere sideways. That's fine if you're on a closed track with a wide stretch of road, that would be great fun, but if you're sharing the road with millions of other cars, it's not a great option to have.

So, the perfect car to drive around the city in massive comfort, without crashing into literally everything, is the M3. And when you get to the track, it's also the perfect car to thrash around, crush the competition, and go back home knowing that you own one of the best cars ever made!

I've been into cars for a long time now. It started as a little kid when I started drawing cars for fun. My cars, though, did not have guns and fins on them, well, most of them didn't, to say the least. I fo...  View profile
