2009 Breast Cancer Awareness Events Around Chicago

Breast cancer affects millions of people around the world. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to focus on finding a cure and raising awareness. Play your part by fundraising or participating in one of the below events during October. Every bit helps.

1. S Factor Event for Women Touched by Breast Cancer

What: S Factor, a company featuring workout classes centered around yoga, Pilates, ballet and other strengthening activities, is hosting the S Factor Event for Women Touch by Breast Cancer, a free workout class focusing on healing.

When: Thursday, October 15 from 6-8p.m.

Where: 1400 W. Hubbard St., Chicago, IL 60642

For Who: Women (You may bring a friend)

Cost: Free

2. Susan G. Komen Marathon for the Cure, Team Chicago

What: To raise breast cancer awareness and raise funds for a cure, partake in a 26.2 mile marathon through Chicago.

When: Sunday, October 11

Where: Grant Park

For Who: Everyone

Cost: Registration: $50, Fundraising Commitment: $2,200 (without race entry) $1,500 (with race entry)

3. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

What: Come and participate in a 3-5 mile walk hosted by The American Cancer Society to raise awareness for breast cancer and funds to cure breast cancer. Walks are held in 9 cities and areas around the Chicagoland area.

When: Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18

Where: Saturday - Belleville, Champaign-Urbana, and Rockford Sunday - Aurora, Chicago, Lake County, Northwest Surburban, South Surburban, and Springfield

For Who: Everybody

Cost: Donations are encouraged

4. Chicago Walk for Hope

What: A 5K walk held by the City of Hope, a cancer center, to fight breast cancer and raise money for research, treatment, and education.

When: Sunday, October 4

Where: Gallery Park at the Glen, Glenview Illinois

For Who: Everybody, children included

Cost: Early Registration (online) - Adults: $25 Children (12 and under): $15

Event Day Registration - Adults: $30 Children (12 and under): $20

Parking - Free

5. Breast Cancer Wellness - Nutrition Class

What: Northwest Memorial Hospital is holding a free series of classes about staying healthy when you have breast cancer. The nutrition class is the first in a four-part series.

When: Tuesday, September 29, 12-1 p.m.

Tuesday, October 27, 12-1 p.m.

Tuesday, November 24, 12-1 p.m.

Where: Wellness Institute, 150 E. Huron, Chicago, Illinois

For Who: Breast cancer patients

Cost: $10 (for parking)

Note: This is the first class in a four-part series. The other classes feature content on keeping fit, stress management, and controlling your weight.
