Whether you want to indulge your inner diva or crave a car that can haul potting soil, this is your year. With a focus on fuel effieciency and the cramped economy new models are more affordable and earth friendly than years past. And they're still a boatload of fun. The automakers have debuted a doozy of a 2009 line including:

Volkswagen Routon - It's American looking and guess why - it was built in the U.S. through a deal with Chrysler. VW engineers tell you this child of two countries has the best of European styling and suspension and all the American features everyone loves - power sliding doors, 13 (!) cup holders, a dual entertainment system, and plenty of cargo space. MPG: 29/40; Starting MSRP: $24,700

Mazda 6 -The sporty styling of the Mazda 6 sets it apart from the crowded family sedan crowd. Plus, yes, there are plentiful style choices such as a four-door hatchback, wagon, or sedan. Traction control, anti-lock breaks, multiple airbags, tons of cargo space and top points from auto reviewers for excellent steering and handling. This isn't a big sedan though so while the interior is stylish and comfy, some auto reviewers note four is the maximum number you'd want to seat. MPG: 20/29; Starting MSRP: $18,550

Mustang - How can you not love a classic sports car that has an optional "warriors in pink" package that supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research? The Mustang is another vehicle that is all about options as evidenced by color choices, roof options (panoramic glass roof, moon roof, convertible or standard) and security packages. Standard equipment includes such must haves as crash sensing and extra air bags. MPG: 17/26; Starting MSRP: $19,995

Honda Fit - This car's been a well-kept gas-friendly secret in Europe for years. Nothing like soaring gas prices and a love for all things Scion or Toyota Prius by the younger crowd to get the auto makers to bring it to the U.S. This car, which crossed the pond to the colonies last year, has been given an even sportier look for this year. It's quick, it's eco friendly, and it's been tweaked for comfort so it gives a less "firm" ride but easy-on-the-lower-back supportive seats. There's also more than 14 cubic space of cargo room so there's plenty of room for the kid's "stuff." MPG: 28/35; Starting MSRP: $14,550

Toyota Corolla - If you remember "New Coke" you'll have a good idea why Toyota doesn't mess around with its top selling economy car that is the model for reliability. Still Toyota did tweak the new model just enough to make sure it keeps up with its stylish counterparts. The 2009 Toyota is sleeker, offers five trim levels, a split folding rear seat, and an upgraded audio system. It's just want you'd expect in a Corolla...but better. MPG: 26/35; Starting MSRP: $15,350

Smart Car - We've featured it before on RedPlum, but you can't talk about top 2009 cars without mentioning the Smart ForTwo. If you are constantly driving here, there and everywhere with your child, this might be your car. It's gotten top safety ratings from the government, gets incredible gas mileage and is green. Plus, it does have some cargo room (enough for about two medium sized boxes). And let's just say it - it's perky and fun to drive. If you want a fuel efficient, easy to park head turner, look no further. MPG: 33/41; Starting MSRP: $11,590
