2009 Emmy Awards: Neil Patrick Harris was Gold at the Emmys

The 2009 Emmy Awards were on CBS last night, and while I don't watch many of the shows that won, the Awards were still awesome. The main reason that the Emmys were entertaining this year is because of host Neil Patrick Harris. Yes, the actor who played Doogie Howser M.D. many, many years ago, brought it to an Emmy show that was entertainingly funny and very high tech.

He came out singing a song that began with "Put down the remote." Usually, because my brain thinks reverse psychology is being used so I would consider picking up the remote with thoughts of changing the channel, but Mr. Harris was so engaging and dressed so nicely that I didn't even consider it. He sang about the Emmys and TV shows and called off about 20 channels in a breath stealing medley that literally brought the host to his knees. It was very clever that he ended with the Oxygen network because he had to need air after all those channels. Neil you had me at Hello.

It was very cool how he explained the night's schedule and how the categories would be broken up. The stage was laid out differently with the band being brought out of the pit. There were moving screens and you could see the control room. I am not the most technically advanced but the stage set up was really amazing.

Neil Patrick Harris kept me entertained for the 3 hour and 3 minute show. He stood at the host's podium which was pretty nice because some of the winners were able to interact with Neil. Winner Jon Stewart even told Neil what a good job he was doing.

My favorite moments involved, Neil, of course. He is insanely funny and his skits with the show's producers when the show was going to or coming from a break were even comical without sound. Sarah McLachlan's in memoriam song was stirring, it was a perfect accompaniment to the screen showing all those we lost this past year. I just loved the announcer who gave quick tidbits of the winner's history when they came onstage to accept their awards. Some of the facts were true and others were made up. It all added to the fun of the night. If I had one complaint it would be the awkwardness that some of the presenters had with each other.

I won't name any names but you know who you are. Oh and another thing, why weren't any of the Desperate Housewives nominated? The show was completely shut out of the acting and writing categories which isn't cool because that is one of the shows that I actually watch and love. Get it together Emmy committee, if it weren't for Neil because I don't watch many of the shows that were nominated, I would have picked up the remote and used it to turn. The fashions were interesting and there was a lot of color. Christina Applegate was the best dressed in my opinion and the Gossip Girls need to try again. All in all the show was colorful, funny, vibrant and very 2009. Hopefully Neil hosts the Emmys again next year, I can't imagine anybody following his stellar performance.
