2009 Emmy Awards Recap of Big Winners

Who Won the Emmy This Year in the Major Categories

Meucci Cameron
Neil Patrick Harris did a good job of hosting the 2009 Emmy Awards. Starting things off with the now obligatory funny song (thank you Billy Crystal). It was fun, but unnecessary for the TV award show. Neil Patrick Harris is fun and cute enough to pull it off.

The powers that be decided to change the format of the award show this year. They split the Emmy Awards into 5 categories; Comedy, Reality Show, Mini Series/Movie, Variety and Drama. It seemed a little like a game show to me, but it also seemed faster... always the goal for an awards show.

2009 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy

Supporting Actress in a Comedy: Kristen Chenoweth "Pushing Daisies"
Moved to tears by the win, Chenoweth's high pitched voiced reached a new level during her acceptance speech. At one point she was speaking hamster.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy: Jon Cryer "2 1/2 Men"
This was one of the few surprises of the night. I like Cryer as the neurotic brother of the narcissist on "2 1/2 Men", but he had very funny competition. The herds from "The Office" and "30 Rock" were all contenders.

Outstanding Actress in a Comedy: Toni Collette " United States of Tara"
Though she did not win, Sarah Silverman stole all the thunder here. Sitting in the audience, dead straight faced, in a full mustache. The camera truly loved her.

Outstanding Actor in a Comedy: Alec Baldwin "30 Rock"
Baldwin was the sure thing for this packed category. I would have loved to have seen Jim Parsons take a shocker though. Alec Baldwin is hilarious on "30 Rock", so still well deserved. At least there was not a Baldwin sweep in the Reality TV category of the Emmy Awards.

Outstanding Comedy: "30 Rock"
No surprises here. Tina Fey and gang bring home the glory again with a total of 22 nominations this year.

2009 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Show

Outstanding Reality TV Show Host: Jeff Probst "Survivor"

Outstanding Reality Show: "The Amazing Race"

2009 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Mini Series/Movie

Supporting Actress in a Mini Series/Movie: Shohreh Aghdashloo "House of Saddam"

Supporting Actor in a Mini Series/Movie:Ken Howard "Gray Garden"
I was so happy for Ken Howard's win. A fan since "The White Shadow" days, I had wondered where Howard had gone. He explained in his acceptance speech as he thanked a stunt woman for donating a kidney to him. This is his first Emmy win. Ken Howard also gets quote of the night for opening with, "I'll keep this speech short to avoid getting interrupted by a Senator or a rapper..."

Outstanding Actress in a Mini Series/Movie: Jessica Lange "Gray Gardens"

Outstanding Actor in a Mini Series/Movie: Brendan Gleeson "Into the Storm"

Outstanding Mini Series/Movie: "Gray Gardens"

2009 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Variety TV Show

Outstanding Director for a Variety: Bruce Gowers "American Idol"
After 7 nominations, American Idol director Bruce Gowers finally gets his trophy. Last season's finale definitely warrants this prize.

Outstanding Variety TV Show: "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"
Another win for Jon Stewarts group, there really should be a limit... nah. The nomination list in the writer's category is always a highlight of Emmy night. This year I think the best was Conan O'Brien hitting 'ignore' on all the FaceBook friend requests of his writers.

Jimmy Fallon also gets credit for funniest presentation tonight. Wearing the Kanye West voice box, he came out singing and dancing before slipping on the floor injuring his back. The sound of him saying "OW" into that voice box still makes me giggle.

2009 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Cherry Jones "24"

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Michael Emerson "Lost"

Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series: Glenn Close "Damages"
Last year's winner returns. Glenn Close is really in a class by herself when it comes to dramatic acting. Though I enjoy Sally Field and had a sentimental pull for her, I fully expected the Close victory.

Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series: Bryan Cranston "Breaking Bad"
Both king and queen hold their titles as Cranston gets his second consecutive win for best actor. Hugh Laurie would be my pick every year, but he usually gets the Golden Globe so it all seems fair. Bryan Cranston deserves it for this AMC series.

Outstanding Drama Series: "Mad Men"

The show was relatively short and Neil Patrick Harris did a good job of keeping things moving along. There was one more new twist to the Emmy Awards this year. Cat Deeley was somewhere looking stunning and reporting on a vote in poll for viewers, adding to the game show feeling. An award of Best Breakthrough Moment went to a scene from "True Blood" at the end of the evening.

Thanks! :) I'd been wondering who won.

Bryan Cranston is in the AMC series Breaking Bad, not HBO. AMC is the network to watch for really quality drama series such as Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

I totally disagree with you regarding Jon Cryer. I think his character makes the show! Charlie Sheen is great in his role as is Jon Cryer in his!

There is NO WAY Jon Cryer should have won BSA in Comedy Series! His character is barely funny and completely generic. Guys like Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) are rare for televsion. Take Dwight out of The Office and the show loses a major part. Whereas, you can easily replace Cryer with ANY actor to play the 'schlub' to Sheen and it will still work. Booooo Academy!

    Good recap!
