Slumdog Millionaire, Kate Winslet, and Heath Ledger Headine Award Winners

The 66th awarding of the Golden Globe Awards was held on Sunday, January 11th in Beverly Hills, California after being away for two years. Last year's 2008 Golden Globe ceremony was cancelled when many of Hollywood's stars refused to cross picket lines that were set by the Writers Guild of America. The awards were still announced--just in the much tamer, and less fun environment of a news conference.

The relatively unknown movie, Slumdog Millionaire swept all four categories that it was eligible for in the 2009 Golden Globes. The movie showcases a little known cast of actors who play out the story of an Indian orphan in the city of Mumbai. The orphan grows up in poverty and ultimately wins an Indian version of the American game show, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", while he tries to find a long lost love from his childhood.

Kate Winslet won two Golden Globes this year after failing to win a Globe or Oscar in her previous five nominations. She won for her role in "The Reader" as a former Nazi prison camp guard and in "Revolutionary Road" as a woman that is in a failing marriage.

As much of Hollywood was predicting, the late Heath Ledger won the 2009 best supporting-actor award for his role in Batman, "The Dark Knight" as the Joker. As a result, his prospects at obtaining an Oscar nomination on the anniversary of his death last year have significantly increased. Previously in Hollywood history, there has only been one actor who has won an Oscar award posthumously, Peter Finch for best-actor.
