William Bass
The Heisman award is given to the college football's most valuable player.

The Heisman candidates for the 2009 college football season that are invited to New York City on Saturday, December 12 2009 are:

Toby Gerhart a Senior running back from Stanford University

Gerhart has 1,376 yards on 311 carries as well as 26 touchdowns that leads college football. Toby Gerhart has 149 yards on 10 catches.

Mark Ingram a Sophomore running back from Alabama

Ingram has led Alabama to a perfect season and had 1,542 yards on only 249 carries. Ingram has 15 touchdowns as well as 30 catches for 322 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Colt McCoy a Senior quarterback from Texas

Colt has led Texas to a perfect season and an opportunity to win the BCS Championship game. In 2009, Colt has 3,512 yards passing for 27 touchdowns. Colt has thrown 12 interceptions and has rushed for 348 years along with 3 touchdowns.

Ndamukong Suh a Senior defensive tackle from Nebraska

Suh has anchored the Nebraska Cornhuskers defense this year with NFL ability. Suh has 70 tackles as well as 7 ½ sacks, 16 tackles for a loss and 3 blocked kicks this year. Suh is predicted to be a lottery pick in the NFL draft.

Tim Tebow a Senior quarterback from the Florida Gators

Tebow has been the anchor for the Florida Gators the last few years. In 2009, Tebow threw for 2,414 yards for 18 touchdowns. Tebow only threw 5 interceptions this year. Tebow's main strength is his running ability and he had 859 yards for 13 touchdowns.

These five 2009 Heisman candidates are worthy of the Heisman award. Each player has produced for their teams. The 2009 Heisman finalists will appear on December 12, 2009 at 8 p.m. on ESPN to see who will be crowned the winner.

Colt McCoy is expected to be one of the top finalists, but I wouldn't count on that as this list of Heisman candidates has some spectacular players.

Tim Tebow won the Heisman in 2007 and finished third in last year's Heisman award ceremony. Tebow's senior year had its ups and downs including getting thumped in the conference championship game against Alabama.

The surprise candidate who I feel will finish in the top three if not win the Heisman award is Mark Ingram the sophomore sensation from the Alabama Crimson Tide. He'll be leading them against Texas and Colt McCoy in the BCS National Championship.
