Here's a good thing about Audi's takeover of Lamborghini. First of all, Audi has all the money in the world to help fund the company, and keep it running. Second, you now get equipment that works! And third of all, Lamborghinis are now easier to drive!
That's sort of like an oxymoron really, because Lamborghinis were never easy cars to drive - it's in their character - or it was, to say the least. The Lamborghini Diablo was a handful to drive. You needed someone to help you steer, change gears, and press the clutch. Same with the Countach. But now, even the girly of girls can get in a Lamborghini, and drive! What has happened? Has Lamborghini softened up the raging bull?
Well, when the Gallardo just came out, I thought they did. I didn't like it at all. I thought it looked too serious, and had none of that Italian sense of humor and passion that you got in previous Lamborghini models. I do like it now, a lot. Especially the LP560-4. It's a hot looking car. It has some of that Reventon lunacy. Speaking of the Reventon, there is no way that Audi were managing Lamborghini when the Reventon was developed. I think Audi officials gave Lamborghini a long break from their common sense, and told them to go crazy, and by the end of the break, have a car designed to their likings. And that's what Lamborghini is all about!
I must say that Audi were impressed by the Reventon, because Lamborghinis are now beginning to be styled after jet fighters. Which is great because you get the idea that the cars now have machine guns on them, and rockets hiding in the vents.
So, Audi got the message, backed off, ad let the crazy Italians do their work. All Audi did was make sure everything worked. And that's the combination that you need. You need Italians to do the work, and the Germans to oversee the work. Because as far as I can remember, last time the Germans and the Italians worked together, it was a disaster! With the new Lamborghini line-up, I have a feeling the Germans are now just managing and overseeing Lamborghini to make sure it's done properly.
So, the question remains - has Audi turned Lamborghini into an Italian version of Audi? Well, I think for a brief period of time, they did, but backed out, and let Lamborghini be Lamborghini. Another spark of common sense, from the land of common sense!
