The 2009 fall schedule of free concerts at the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington begins September 24, and runs through October 25. Opened in 2008, the Levitt Pavilion in Arlington is an amphitheater located in Founders Plaza, across from city hall. The grounds of the Pavilion can seat up to 2,000 people, and parking is plentiful.

In keeping with its mission, the fall series will feature 25 concerts, to bring the total number of concerts for the year to 50. As in previous years, each night of the series presents a different type of music.

This year, at the Arlington Pavilion, Thursday evenings will be filled with 'World Music," with artists such as Brave Combo, billed as "mosh-pit polka," and djo-gbe, A Night in Africa, featuring dancers and musicians creating an "African village celebration." Friday nights are reserved for Latin Music. Alex Cuba, Salero!, and Del Castillo are among the performers who will appear on Fridays.

Two concerts take place on Saturdays, one in the afternoon for children, and one for adults in the evening. The Saturday night adult theme is American music, and will highlight Ray Wylie Hubbard, Blame Sally, an all-female band, and Odis. Children will see and hear Eddie Coker sing about purple ducks, Farmer Jason, and David Chicken, a combination of Elvis and superhero, among others.

Music Café is the theme of Sunday concerts, at which The Joe Jonas Band, Terell Stafford and the UTA Jazz Orchestra, and the Arlington Jones Trio will perform.

The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts is a non-profit festival; for more than 30 years, it has been hosting outdoor concerts, with performances of music, dance, and interactive shows. The Levitt Pavilion in Arlington is the most recent addition to the Levitt Pavilion family.

Mortimer Levitt created The Mortimer Levitt Foundation in 1963 to support several causes, one of them being the arts. The first Levitt Pavilion opened in Westport, CT, in 1974, and has been presenting outdoor concerts every year since then, with a pledge of presenting at least 50 each season, all free of charge.

Since the first pavilion opened more than 30 years ago in Connecticut, people have brought their blankets, lawn chairs, and coolers, and claimed a spot on the lawn, to listen to professional musicians who perform under the stars.

In addition to the original Levitt Pavilion in Connecticut, there are now two in California, one in Pennsylvania, one in Memphis, TN, which also opened in 2008, and one in Arlington. The tradition continues at those locations, as all are committed to honoring the goal of a minimum of 50 free concerts each year.
