The Mets. Injuries. Fans. What does this mean? In 2009, the Mets had their first losing season in 4 years, despite starting the season as one of baseballs premiere teams.
Slowly one by one Mets player's most good ones too got hurt. It was almost like a curse. Let me list some names of those who spent time on the DL: Carlos Beltran, Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, J.J Putz, Brian Schnider, John Maine and even David Wright had a short turn. That's probably not all of them either.
Some guys, like K-Rod and Oliver Perez, just did terrible compared to former seasons. K-Rod blew way too many saves. Oliver hardly got to play in the majors this year. The year wasn't all bad news though. Many young players got chances in the majors, Daniel Murphy played again this year with, F-Mart and Nick Evans. The team's fate lied on the shoulders of David Wright and what other good few players the Mets could through together. Jonathon Niese who looked like he could be an easy number five guy tore his hamstring.
The Mets, at first struggled to keep their heads above water. By August the Mets were free-falling. They had a losing season and finished in 4th place in the NL Ease ahead of only the Washington Nationals. The Mets had a poor farm system, with their Triple-A team performing like their Single-A team.
David Wrights first time on the DL was painful. Watching the face of the Mets go down from a pitch to head hurt, it hurt badly. This season, being a Met fan hurt more than in 2008 and 2007. This is easily the most injured Met team in their history. The Mets are also the most injured MLB team this year.
Being a Met fan was also hard this year, not because the Mets did horrible but because of Yankee fans. Now with the World Series won, Yankee fans have been very abusive. Instead of going out and standing up for their team, Met fans have been laying low. This makes me pretty upset, as I am a big Mets fan. The number of people wearing Mets attire and stuff has dropped a ton this year. Less and less fans are willing to show their team spirit. Met fans have waited 23 years for a World Series, when are the Mets going to deliver?
Well my best guess is with their current young talent and position; the Mets are posed to be a force by 2012. Other than a few decent talents, the Mets have a poor farm system. Hopefully the next draft which they will be very high in will help. Most the Mets prospects are in Triple-A or were called up to the majors in 2009 to try and help stop the bleeding.
Well, I hope you learned a little about the Met disaster that was 2009 and other things about the Metropolitans, yes that's their full name. For Met fans everywhere, wear your Met clothes come out of the shadows. Good luck and Godspeed to the Mets.
