2009 NCAA Sweet Sixteen Schedule - All Top Seeds Advance

2009 NCAA Sweet 16 Schedule. For the first time ever, 5 teams from one conference, the Big East, have made the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Louisville, UConn, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Villanova all are playing in the regional semi-finals later in the week starting on Thursday. Louisville and Pitt each had close calls today but prevailed in the end to make the next round of the tournament. Louisville was behind Nr. 9 seed Siena with just over 7 minutes to go on Sunday, but won in the end, 79-72. The win sets head coach Rick Pitino up to make a run at the national championship with his last national title coming at Kentucky in 1996. They will play Nr. 12 seeded Arizona in Indianapolis on Friday. Overall, Big East teams were 11-2 in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The Big 12 went 9-3 with 3 teams in the Sweet 16 and the ACC who had 7 teams get into the tournament, only went 5-5 with UNC and Duke as the sole survivors heading into the next round of play.
