2009 NFL Preview - Rookies Offensive that Have a Chance to Make an Impact

Eric Williams
Following another absolutely thrilling season of NFL football action in 2008, NFL fanatics across the globe - just like the actual players that pay the game - are beginning their preparation for the upcoming 2009 NFL season by gathering the most pertinent team and player information that they can.

Several teams in both conferences - both, legitimate Super Bowl title contenders and pretenders alike - will be counting on their gifted rookies to help them record winning seasons while getting into the postseason and giving their respective franchises a chance to win the Super Bowl XLIV.

While some of these rookies will be playing for playoff participating teams and others won't, all have a chance of helping their respective teams win more games in 2009.

With that thought in mind, here is a look at seven offensive rookie players I believe will make an almost immediate impact on their respective NFL teams in 2009.

Jeremy Maclin WR - Philadelphia Eagles

I've been watching Maclin, the 19th overall draft pick since he enrolled to play for the Missouri Tigers and even as a freshman, I thought he'd be a star someday. The Philadelphia Eagles are a perennial Super Bowl contender that desperately needed another top flight wide receiver to make plays alongside fleet-footed second-year man DeSean Jackson. Maclin is also an excellent kick returner that can 'take it to the house' at any given time. Maclin could be an impact player while helping the Eagles reach Super Bowl XLIV.

Percy Harvin - WR - Minnesota Vikings

Harvin, the No. 22 overall draft pick is a playmaker that the Vikings will get on the field often as a rookie and are currently installing an entire new set of offensive plays specifically designed for the multiple-position, receiver-runner-returner. Harvin's jaw-dropping speed and athleticism would have made him a top 10 selection, but Harvin tested positive for marijuana at this year's NFL Combine and several teams may come to regret removing him from their potential boards because of it. Still, Harvin, a former Florida Gator, has All-Pro ability written all over him and could be an immediate impact player for the Minnesota Vikings this season.

Knowshown Moreno - RB - Denver Broncos

Moreno, the No. 12 overall draft pick out of the University of Georgia, is a playmaker that could shine for the Broncos if rookie head coach Josh McDaniel uses him often during his rookie season. Moreno is a solid multiple threat player that can make plays for the new-look Broncos both as a runner and as a receiver out of the backfield.

Chris 'Beanie' Wells - RB - Arizona Cardinals

Wells, the No. 31 overall draft pick is going to an ideal situation with the explosive Arizona Cardinals. The former Ohio State Buckeye will be a perfect compliment to smaller, quicker running back Tim Hightower and should see plenty of time with the Cardinals beginning to phase out veteran back Edgerrin James. Wells is a bruising runner with just enough speed and elusiveness to make hitters miss and should help Arizona's offense become even more potent in 2009.

Mark Sanchez - QB - New York Jets

Sanchez has fallen into a dream situation with the New York Jets and could possibly be the team's starter come Opening Day. The former USC Trojan and No. 4 overall draft pick has joined a Jets team that seems to have a definitive plan toward building toward the near future and could be a playoff contender if they get some above average play at quarterback this season.

Michael Crabtree - WR - San Francisco 49ers

Crabtree, the No. 10 overall draft pick, is undeniably talented. However, there are questions about Crabtree off the field, which caused him to drop to No. 10 in this draft after originally being predicted to go much higher in the first round. Crabtree, a former Texas Tech Red Raider, has walked into an ideal situation with the receiver-starved Niners and should see plenty of playing time as a rookie if he isn't the Opening Day starter. While Crabtree's freakish athleticism will shine through for San Francisco at some point this season, much of his success as a rookie will depend on the San Francisco's erratic play at quarterback the last few seasons. Either former No. 1 overall draft pick Alex Smith or Shaun Hill will compete for the starting quarterback position this preseason.

Matthew Stafford - QB - Detroit Lions

Stafford, the No. 1 overall draft pick, has been deemed as the future of the lowly Detroit Lions and all eyes will be on him whenever he makes his debut as the Lions starter, which could happen on Opening Day. Unfortunately for Stafford and the Lions, they are still weak up front, meaning Stafford will likely be making a lot of throws on the run - when he's not being pummeled into the turf that is. Still, Stafford has a top-flight receiver in Calvin Johnson and could begin to turn around the fortunes of the sad-sack Lions sometime in the near future.

I hate that McNabb has Maclin to throw the ball to in addition to his other weapons. Even with Calvin Johnson, Stafford is going to have some struggles this year. A Broncos running back drafted with the number 12 overall pick? Mike Shanahan must have been nauseous at seeing that.
