2009 NFL Week 5 Power Rankings

Jim Kelly
So far this season has already been filled with huge drama and many surprises. Jay Cutler's new team has one more loss than his old team, Mark Sanchez is proving to be the next coming of Broadway Joe, and Brett Favre is throwing the ball and winning like it was 1996. That being said there are a huge amount of disappointments already so far, the defending champs are play .500, Dallas can't seem to get it going, and T.O. can't bring the Bills out from the huge shadow cast by the rest of the AFC East. As we move into Week 5 here is an updated look at the power rankings:

1. New York Giants - Steve Smith is showing he can be the number one receiver and Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks have made the G-Men receiving core very solid.

2. Indianapolis Colts - Peyton Manning has his team running on all cylinders. They have a dominant defense and anytime you can win a game when only having the ball for fifteen minutes, it shows how good you really are.

3. New Orleans Saints - The best win of the weekend against the previously unbeaten New York Jets, all you can be thinking now is Super Bowl or bust.

4. Minnesota Vikings - Brett Favre gets revenge on his former team and he looks like hes throwing the ball better than ever. Even though their defense did let up 23 to the Packers, they're still one of the best in the league.

5. Denver Broncos - I gave Denver no respect last week because of their wins, but now that they remain undefeated with an outcast quarterback, a disgruntled wide receiver, and a new head coach, plus they now have two quality wins against Cincinnati and Dallas, I have to show them some love.

6. New England Patriots - I should have never doubted Tom & Co. but I did. A very solid win against who I still believe is one of the best teams in the AFC, the Ravens. Look for a rematch come January.

7. New York Jets - Losing to the Saints isn't something to hang your head over, only scoring ten points in the game might be though. The Californian behind center needs to put up more than 10 against that high flying offense.

8. Baltimore Ravens - Another team that lost but still remains in the top 10. Their defense faltered against the Pats this week despite some bad calls if this team wants to win the Super Bowl they have to knock off teams like the Patriots and Colts.

9. San Francisco 49ers - A good little Cinderella. Their only competition is Arizona who seems to be falling off the deep end. They showed their offensive muster in a 35-0 win against the lowly St. Louis, if you haven't already, get Frank Gore on your fantasy team pronto.

10. Philadelphia Eagles - Coming off a bye-week the Eagles always seem to do well. Kolb or McNabb or Vick can win you a game at this point.

11. Chicago Bears - A 24 point trumping of the Lions isn't something to celebrate unless you won 24-0. The defense may be heading downhill without Urlacher in the middle, the good news is Jay Cutler finally looks worth it, plus his Elwayesque dive in the 1st quarter shows his heart.

12. Cincinnati Bengals - They should be 4-0 at this point but last weeks win is something to be proud of, not so much the 3 point squeaker they just pulled against Cleveland.

13. Pittsburgh Steelers - Big Ben needs to keep having big games against the big teams and the defense needs to continue playing like they did in the first half, not so much the last quarter.

14. Atlanta Falcons - Coming off a bye-week as well, Matt Ryan will look to Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez to help along the way and try to keep pace with the Saints.

15. Jacksonville Jaguars - Two straight wins is always good especially after starting out 0-2. They have a chance to completely turn their season around and the next game will pretty much determine what happens with Coach Jack Del Rio and quarterback David Gerrard.

16. San Diego Chargers - A loss at Pittsburgh hurts, Ladian looking washed up hurts much, much more. Rivers had a great 2nd half but it just wasn't enough. He needs to keep looking to his big tight end Gates if they want to win.

17. Green Bay Packers - A Monday Night loss to the Vikings is never good. A Monday Night loss to your former quarterback who you ran out of town is even worse. Now they're in third place in the tough NFC North, they need some big wins are they're not making the playoffs.

18. Dallas Cowboys - Maybe they shouldn't have gotten rid of T.O. and Roy Williams. Williams especially wouldn't have let Brandon Marshall zig-zag all over the field for the game winning touchdown Sunday. Where's the heart?

19. Houston Texans - 2-2 is decent if your two wins have come against good teams. Last weeks win against Oakland isn't something to hang your hat on but it is something to build on.

20. Washington Redskins - Barely winning against Tampa Bay is not a good sign. Look for Jim Zorn to be fired by the end of the season and Jason Campbell to be benched before that.

21. Miami Dolphins - A big win to keep them from going 0-4 against the Bills was just what they needed. The defending AFC East champs though look to be going in the opposite direction they were headed last year.

22. Arizona Cardinals - Coming off a bye-week this team needs to step up big time and play well the rest of the way to overtake the 49ers.

23. Seattle Seahawks - They simply just can't win without Hasselback. Wallace is a third string quarterback at best, and playing the Colts doesn't help anything either.

24. Detroit Lions - Stafford may be done for awhile, which in no way can be good but lets face it he already won the hearts of the fans winning a game for the first time since 2007.

25. Oakland Raiders - They just look awful don't they? Their coach may be arrested and suspend and as a bonus they get to play the Giants in the Meadowlands.

26. Buffalo Bills - I really thought they were going to be competitive this year with T.O., I was really wrong though.

27. Carolina Panthers - Another team with a bye-week, they need to win or they can start looking for teams who want Steve Smith (everyone) and trade him for a 1st round draft pick to try and get McCoy.

28. Cleveland Browns - Better than last week but still not good. Losing is just the way things go in this town.

29. Kansas City Chiefs - Another horrid start for this team, you need to surround Cassel with somebody, anybody.

30. Tennessee Titans - Fischer is losing it and Kerry Collins needs to step down and let Vince Young take some snaps. Was Albert Haynesworth really all they needed last year?

31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Bad, just really, really bad.

32. St. Louis Rams - Worse, just way, way worse.
