2009 Oktoberfest Events in the Tampa Area and Nearby

Or the Case of the Dueling Oktoberfests

Paula Andra
There are usually several fall festival events around Oktoberfest. But since most of them are sponsored by the schools they haven't been announced yet, or may be cut back due to the economy. If you're looking for more choices in the October festivals, check out your local school in September. While our son was in grade school, I volunteered in our local school's version.

This article covers three events. The first two options claim to be the most authentic. Since they're offered at different times, you can check out both. The first includes a want-ad for vendors. The third event is a Floridian version. That's why I'm including it,though it's outside the Tampa Bay area.

I planned to teach college art in studio & history. But I needed to home school our son and did short term missions instead, which benefited from my education. I write about the trips I take for our ministry.  View profile

  • There are two different Tampa Bay Oktoberfests at different times, that claim to be the best.
  • One of the Florida Oktoberfests is actually a fishing tournament.
  • One of the Tampa Bay Oktoberfest venues is calling for vendors.

I attended both Oktoberfests in Oldsmar ant in Pinellas Park. For authenticity, the German American Society in Pinellas Park wins hands down. The food is made and served by Germans Americans. It is as good as you can get in any of the areas German restaurants at a fraction of the price. And the atmosphere is very much like the experience in Munich. The German food at Oldsmar is mediocre. It has a carnival atmosphere, is much larger and more commercialized. Both festivals server great German Beers but both food and beer at Oldsmar were much more expensive. A pitcher of German Beer at Oldsmar was $17 compared to only $8 in Pinellas Park. It's worth a trip to both if only for the beer. If I could only go to one the German American Society in Pinellas Park is superior and will cost less if you plan to eat and drink.
And the music and entertainment were superb.
