2009 Oscar Highlights Include Kunio Kato's Speech: Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto
Complete Oscar Winners and Nominees List
Celebrity Oscar news: Kunio Kato's speech ends on a high note; Penelope Cruz wins Oscar as Twitter users give a collective boo; Jerry Lewis award the Oscar humanitarian award; Kate Winslett won her first Oscar for her role in "The Reader."
The best Oscar speech may have been given by the winner of the best animated short film, "La Maison en Petits Cubes", Kunio Kato. He was having a issue with his English in his acceptance speech but with just one line he nailed it. Kunio Kato said at the end of his speech "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto." It was a perfect ending to his speech. The Oscar crowd went wild and online sites like Twitter were on fire over his Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto reference. Domo arigato is a Japanese phrase that means thank you very much in English. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto was made a popular phrase here in the US after being a hit song from the group Styx in 1983. TMZ has posted the video of Kunio Kato's speech here.
The younger generation is having a hard time grasping what he was talking about. Google has been filled with requests for Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto lyrics. If you are looking for the lyrics, you can find them here.
Penelope Cruz won a Oscar for best supporting actress for Vicky Christina Barcelona. You could almost hear the Twitterverse chant a giant boo. Penelope Cruz definitely was not the pick to win on Twitter. What does the twitterverse know anyway? I think Penelope Cruz deserved the Oscar.
Jerry Lewis received a humanitarian award at the Oscars. Eddy Murphy was on hand to present Jerry Lewis with the humanitarian Oscar award. Jerry Lewis gave a touching Oscar speech saying, "For most of my life I thought that doing good for someone didn't mean you would receive commendation for that act of kindness, At least until now."
Kate Winslet finally won a Oscar for her role in "The Reader" I am thankful she finally won a Oscar. Kate Winslett had already been nominated. In her acceptance speech, you could tell she was genuinely thankful for the award. Kate Winslet thanked her parents and asked her father to whistle so she knew exactly where he was. It is so nice to see an actress that is so appreciative.
