2009 Primetime Emmy Awards Best and Worst Dressed List (Ladies Only)

While Mariska Hargitay and Olivia Wilde Fought for Best Dressed, Marcia Gay Harden's Hideous Number Went Without Saying as Worst

Not everyone watching the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday evening was looking for the Emmy winners, but were instead actually searching for the best and worst dressed among the Emmy Awards attendees. Although most dressed fairly well, especially the guys (can you go wrong in a basic tux?), there were a few ladies at the 2009 Primetime Emmay Awards that deserve a nod in the best dressed category. Unfortunately, there were also a few that deserve a "worst dressed" designation as well. One would think with all that money to throw around -- if not personal, then promotional -- some of these celebrities would hire someone to tell them when they're going to embarrass themselves...

Some of the Best Dressed

Among the best dressed at the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards was the stunning Olivia Wilde ("House"). Although the zipper in the back was too observable, as was pointed out by Newsday, it was the only flaw in the sexy Marchesa gown. Speaking of Marchesa, Sandra Oh and a very pregnant Heidi Klum both sported beautiful dresses by the designer.

Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU") was simply beautiful (she's beautiful, the gown made her moreso) in a silver lame Carolina Herrera number.

E! Entertainment's Catt Sadler was elegant in her pumice mermaid-tight number.

Gorgeous Kristin Chenoweth ("Pushing Daisies") was dazzling in her short dress with mirrors as she accepted her 2009 Primetime Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Kate Walsh ("Private Practice") was stunning in her blue J. Mendel number.

And although Blake Lively's ("Gossip Girl") red Versace was pretty, it was more of a anatomical accentuator than anything, highlighting her femininity with deep slits on top and on the bottom. Even if one did not like it, with Blake Lively in it, it was an attention-grabber.

Some of the Worst Dressed

Although this writer did not see her in any "worst dressed" lists, Mila Kunis' red poofy-scarfy thing certainly ranks up near the top. With overdone mascara, Mila Kunis looked positively Goth. And not in a good Goth way, either.

Sarah Silverman, whose comedy borders on the nonexistent, certainly showed she had an amusing fashion sense with her electric blue whatever. The strapless piece would have worked had it not been for the drapes depending from each hip.

Victoria Rowell ("The Young And The Restless") may have been showing where she stands politically, but her tablecloth-resembling dress with President Obama insets certainly proved she was politically incorrect on the red carpet at the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards.

One of the worst dressed of the night had to go to the shimmering blue toga-like number sported by Christina Applegate ("Samantha Who?"). It did nothing to flatter her and that huge sash-thing across her midriff was simply an eyesore. So was the bow and the continuation of the sash-thing down the left side of the dress.

Leighton Meester of "Gossip Girls" missed where her colleague Blake Lively hit. Meester showed up in a poofy rope-strapped white gown with white apron -- or something like that. Hideous by any other name...

Television chef Padma Lakshmi was beautiful in her backless purple spaghetti-strapped gown -- until one looked below her shoulders and noticed a huge rose garden someone applied to her hip.

"Transformers" star Kristen Quintrall's black dress, although v-cut deep like Blake Lively's Versace, was a definite miss. The sheer connecting piece that covered the v-cut was distracting, but not enough to take away from the fact that the rest of the dress was simply ugly.

Let's not even mention that godawful ruby with black sash atrocity Marcia Gay Harden wore designed by Badgley Mishka, making Harden by far the worst of the worst dressed for the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards.

did not win. She's a good actress, but she has packed on quite a few pounds since the show began. It is in the process of "jumping the shark," so I'm sorry she didn't get an Emmy for her portrayal of the always-entertaining Celia.

When they focused on Christina Applegate (in her category) up close, her blue dress with sparkly trim made her look beautiful. I had not seen a "full length" picture of her earlier, but in the inset shots, her dress was not the disaster you describe. The dress that WAS a disaster was the one worn by the Irish actress from "Little Dorrit." I don't even want to know what her name was: she needed to purchase (and wear) a good foundation garment. It was obvious that she had no bra under the reddish dress and it wouldn't have hurt the mature actress to wear more than that. It was definitely the worst dress I saw, as she ascended the podium to accept her award. I did not watch the "walk on the red carpet" stuff, so your descriptions of the complete, full-length outfits may well be right. I've been watching "Weeds" regularly, and the nominee from that show for Best Supporting Actress also could invest in some Maidenform help for her lower body, so I hope she did. (Never noticed, because she d

I thought Leighton's getup was atrocious, too. But, I also thought Blake looked like a... well, bad. :P
