Previewing the Upcoming 2009 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament

2009 SEC Basketball Tournament Bracket and Preview. The regular season is now complete and the SEC Tournament brackets are set. Some surprises on the final day of regular season play to include Vanderbilt's upset of LSU, Tennessee surging to number 1 in the SEC East, and the continued collapse of the Kentucky Wildcats. Going into the 2009 SEC tournament, only LSU and Tennessee are really guaranteed a spot in the NCAA tournament with Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt all possibilities depending on their tournament play. The following are previews of the leading teams going into the tournament along with where you can download sec basketball tournament brackets.

2009 SEC Tournament Preview - LSU

LSU has surprised everyone in the SEC this season. They won the SEC outright with only two losses. Although LSU doesn't need to win the tournament to get into the NCAA field, if they can have a good showing their tournament seed could end up as high as a 3 or 4 seed for March Madness. If they lose their first contest after dropping the regular season finale to Vanderbilt, then look for LSU to drop to a 7 or 8 seed in the NCAA tour. The Tigers will face a tough opponent in their first game between Ole Miss or Kentucky with each team being dangerous and hungry heading into the LSU game.

2009 SEC Tournament Preview - Tennessee

Tennessee has played good enough at the end of SEC play to solidify what looked like a shaky NCAA tournament spot back in January. With big wins over division rivals Florida and South Carolina on the road, Tennessee heads into the post season with the toughest strength of schedule in the SEC and a top 25 RPI. They will likely end up as a 7 or 8 seed depending on the outcome of the SEC tournament, but could prove dangerous to number 2 or 3 seeds in the NCAA tournament.

2009 SEC Tournament Preview - Florida

The Gators won what many were calling a NCAA tournament plan-in game to close out the 2009 SEC season against Kentucky at home. They didn't look pretty, but have somehow managed to get more than 20 wins this year and should be able to make the NCAA tournament if they can win one or two 2009 SEC Tournament games.

2009 SEC Tournament Preview - Kentucky

If Kentucky doesn't at least make the SEC Tournament finals they are likely heading to the NIT and will miss the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1992. They have lost 4 straight games and need big games from Jodi Meeks and Patrick Patterson to get traction in the 2009 SEC Tournament. Lots of rumors on the street on Coach Billie Gillespie's job security if the Cats fail to get it done in the SEC tournament with two future NBA players on the squad (Meeks and Patterson).

2009 SEC Tournament Preview - South Carolina

If the Gamecocks had taken down Tennessee they would be in the driver's seat heading into the 2009 SEC tournament. As a result of the back to back losses to the Vols and Commodores, they are still in the hunt for a NCAA tournament bid and will need to win a few games in the 2009 SEC tournament to have a shot at something more than an NIT bid!

Correction... although LSU did lose to Vanderbilt, it wasn't their season finale. The last regular season game was a 69 - 53 loss at Auburn.
