St. Patrick's Day
Neighborhood: Downtown, Midtown, Cordova
Memphis, TN 38103

Saint Patrick's Day is readily associated with the Irish, shamrocks, green, beer, parties and parades. As a child we were told to wear green on St. Patrick's Day or suffer a pinch from anyone who noticed our infraction. Traditions continue even today. Memphis still comes alive at this time of the year, lending a fresh meaning to going 'green,' in it's St. Patrick's celebrations.

If you are looking for family friendly activities to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in 2009, start with the following events:

On Friday, March 13, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, located at 277 So. Fourth Street at Linden, is hosting a St. Patrick's Day Celebration and Fish Fry. The event will take place from 6 pm to 8 pm.

You may want to come out to the Shamrock Showdown on Friday - Sunday, March 13 -15, sponsored by Gamesdays Baseball's First Tennessee Fields, located at 7800 Fischer Street Road in Cordova, Tennessee. For more information, call 531-7410.

The grandest of St. St. Patrick's Day parades will take place on Saturday, March 14 on Beale Street at 3 pm. Come out and join in the fun with green beer, live music and great food.

After enjoying St. Patrick's Day Celebrations with the kids, you may be ready for a more mature set of events.

If you are looking for the best St. Patrick's Day Parties in town, you may want to start with the most popular Irish pubs in town:

Celtic Crossing is located in the Cooper Young District in Midtown Memphis. Enjoy live music, beer and good food from one of Memphis' popular Irish pub and restaurant. Celtic Crossing is located at 903 S. Cooper Street.

Dan McGuiness and T.J. Mulligan's are owned by the same company. Dan McGuiness serves the Memphis area at 4698 Spottswood, were it offers authentic Irish dishes, such as Shepard's Pie, Bangers and Mash, and Irish Stew. Come out and enjoy a variety of events that include live music, contests and karaoke. T.J. Mulliganis is located at 362 Main Street and also offers a warm and cozy atmosphere.

Silky O'Sullivan's is most famous for it's 'Divers'; a gallon bucket of beer. Although the restaurant doesn't serve Irish food, it carries a motto that 'Everyday is St. Patrick's Day!' Silky O'Sullivan's can be located at 183 Beale Street.

Murphy's offers a friendly atmosphere, live music and a popular happy hour in an Irish pub setting. Murphy's has served the Memphis area since 1977 at 1589 Madison Avenue.

St. Patrick's Day has always been a fun and festive holiday. So, when you leave home on Tuesday, March 17, don't forget your green. There are those us who take this tradition very seriously and are ready to pinch without warning.
