2009 Stock Market Holidays for the United States and Canada

Angie Mohr CA CMA
Following is the schedule for holiday closings for all major stock exchanges in both the United States and Canada for 2009. There are some considerations to keep in mind when trading around holidays:

(1) trading is generally thin on Canadian stock markets on a U.S. stock market holiday and prices can fluctuate more than usual. Trade with caution on these days.

(2) stock market holidays cannot be trade settlement days so planned sales and purchases must take these dates into consideration when planning trading cash flow.

(3) trading volumes are often high on the day before or the day after a stock market holiday which can often drive prices up or down depending on the direction of the market.
