The 2009 SXSW list of speakers and their topics is an eclectic mix of the classic and modern film world with media and the web thrown in for good measure. For example, Patricia Aufderheide of the Center for Social Media American University will be speaking on the topic of "From Script to Screen." By contrast, "Alternative Publicity: Grabbin' Eyeballs and Sparkling Buzz" is the topic of choice from Vaguely Qualified Productions' Negrin Farsad.
A few highlights of the film speaking engagements include:
Joey Figueroa of Chop Shop Entertainment will be presenting "Crash the Server - How to Market your Movie by Achieving Webisode Awesomeness" on Saturday, March 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 12AB of the Austin Convention Center.
"Surviving the Festival Circuit" by Trevor Groth of Sundace/Cinevegas will be presented in Room 15 of the Austin Convention Center on March 17. This topic will be presented from 3 - 4 p.m.
Vivid's Meggan Mallone will present "Vivid Entertainment - The Sex-Driven Market" from 3 - 4 p.m. on March 17. Meggan Mallone will be speaking in the Austin Conference Center's Room 16AB.
On March 15, from 1 - 2 p.m., Scott Macaulay will be moderating a panel on "Self Distribution Not All By Yourself". This panel will be held in Room 15 of the Austin Conference Center, and will include Chris Hyams, Richard Abramowitz, Jon Reiss and Caitlin Boyle. Chris Hyams is the Founder and CEO of B-Side Entertainment Inc.
Along with the panels and speaking engagements are conversations with notable names in the industry. One such conversation is between Todd Haynes and Richard Linklater, both writers and directors. Other conversations include Col Needham, Bob Berney, and Jan Harlan -- on a Stanley Kubrick panel.
Stanley Kubrick passed away on March 7, 1999. However, prior to his death, was nominated for and won multiple awards including an Oscar, a BAFTA Film award, a Bodil, a BSFC Award, two Davids, a European David, a Director's Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award, a Critic's Award, a Nocciola d'Oro, a Gold Guild Film Award from the Guild of German Art House Cinemas, three Silver Ribbons from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists, among others.
All engagements are subject to change, so attendees are advised to check the official SXSW website for the latest information before buying tickets and traveling to attend the various events. A custom event calendar may be created on the SXSW website by users in order to keep track of all the desired events to attend.
