2009 Television Shows that Feature Moms

Some Pretty Weird Moms

Gary Davis
Now, as we move to the 2009 mid-season, shows are beginning to reflect the storylines of some new moms and some are a little weird but they do show promise.

Again I have to stick with my old friend Marge Simpson who has to put up with Homer's shenanigans. She has an incorrigible son named Bart ("Eat my shorts!"); she has a brilliant but tattle-tale daughter named Lisa and a baby named Maggie who is self-sufficient. In addition to her own family she negotiates a town full of people who "aren't quite right."

"Bad Mother's Handbook" is premiering this year mid-season. It promises to be an interesting show about a 32-year-old mom played by Alicia Silverstone who is trying to raise a teenage daughter as well as a middle-aged mother played by Megan Mullally.

The teenage daughter is played by Alia Shawkat late of "Arrested Development." I don't know how well Alicia Silverstone is going to fill the role of a mother she seems to be a bit of a rebellious child herself.

Another new show featuring a mom is "Kath and Kim" which is based on an Australian series featuring a mother and daughter. The comedy occurs when the daughter moves back in with mom after only six weeks of marriage and what is interesting and a little bit disconcerting is the lack of space in their ages, eight years. It will be on Thursday, October 9th at 9 pm Eastern.

Then there is "Valentine" that has a mom as part of a family of Greek Gods trying to get the right people "fixed up."

"Easy Money" has Laurie Metcalf in the role of mom of family that is a loan-sharking family. That should be funny especially since she has a "goody-two-shoes" son that is at odds with her. It will be on September 21st at 9 pm Eastern.

Lois Griffin of "Family Guy" is another cartoon mom with real human problems. She has to deal with working (giving piano lessons) as well as taking care of kids and a pet. However she has a unique problem; her baby wants to kill her. It makes no sense but it's funny. "Family Guy" is on at Sunday Night 9pm Eastern.

Kathryn Erbe is a star on "Law and Order." In real life she became pregnant so they wrote into the script that she was carrying her sister's baby since there was "nice" way to have her pregnant.

The unique thing about this and the way that it plays into a "motherhood" mode is that it is going to bother her when she gives the baby to her sister after carrying it. She will fret about it and dreaming and thinking about motherhood is going to play a major factor in future episodes.

In a review for mid-season, there are now a lot more new shows featuring moms.
