Model Overview: The Toyota Camry Hybrid appears similar to other Camry models. The main difference is the unique power-train which returns great fuel economy numbers for a small increase in price over other Camry models. Pricing: The Toyota Camry starts at a low base price of $19,145. The base model forgoes many options to keep the price low. However, the hybrid model, the focus of this review is well equipped at starts at a price of $26,150. For the price, you get many standard features and the added benefit of good fuel economy numbers.
Performance: For all practical purposes, the Camry Hybrid drives similar to other Camry models. It offers a solid ride, with decent handling. Though far from sporty, the Camry Hybrid displays good road characteristics and offer adequate acceleration. The Hybrid model returns 33 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. Great numbers for a midsize sedan. Power is provided by a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine that outputs 147 hp and is paired with an electric motor that adds an additional 40 hp from 30 kW of electrical power. The battery system used is a nickel metal hydride system that provides power to the electric motor.
Standard Features: The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid comes well equipped with features including a 6 speed automatic transmission, halogen headlights, front fog lights, 17 inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust with chrome tips, rear defrost, and so on. The hybrid version has many standard features that are optional on lower model levels.
Bottom Line: Consumers buy hybrid vehicles for their fuel efficiency and the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid returns strong fuel economy numbers at a bargain price. At 33 city and 34 highway mpg, the Camry Hybrid may not win for overall fuel economy numbers, but it is a no sacrifice hybrid. It offers all that is expected of a standard Camry, but sips fuel at a lower rate.
