The famed 16-14 fifth set of the 2009 Wimbledon men's final between Federer and Andy Roddick is already at legendary status. In the end, it added to the legend of Roger Federer even further, after he finally won his record-breaking 15'th Grand Slam.
Video replays of Federer's 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 win at the 2009 Wimbledon men's final are already in high demand. It is destined to be an ESPN Classic, and get compared endlessly with the 2008 Wimbledon men's final between Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Federer and Nadal's final was a bit more surreal, considering all the rain delays, how they nearly played in the dark, and how Nadal finally broke through at Wimbledon over Federer. The 2009 Wimbledon men's final had Andy Roddick as the upstart this time, trying to break through against Federer after years of major losses to him.
In this case, Roddick played the match of his life and still lost to Federer, unlike Nadal. After both players held serve for almost an hour in the fifth set, Federer finally broke Roddick in the 30'th game of the set.
With Federer now the most decorated major championship winner in the history of men's tennis, there are no more heights for Federer to climb after the 2009 Wimbledon men's final. All that is left - other than winning all four majors in a year - is for Federer to make his record harder to break for the next generation.
For Andy Roddick, video replays of the final may be just as heartbreaking as replays of last year's final may have been for Federer. Roddick had been counted out as a major threat for some time, before coming back with a vengeance at Wimbledon.
But Roddick will have to wait for the U.S. Open to get another major shot at Federer, who is now 19-2 against him.
The 2009 Wimbledon men's final video will be put alongside the 2008 final for a very long time to come. Plus, it sets an even higher bar for the 2010 Wimbledon men's final to reach.
