2009 World Nude Day: Dropping Your Trousers for the Common Good

Gary Picariello
Of course, World Nude Day '09 is about FREEDOM. In fact, if World Nude Day had originated in America I'd be the first one to exclaim, "... And THIS is what makes America great!" Because something like World Nude Day underscores the fact that in America we can practically do whatever the heck we want and are protected by the Bill of Rights. The only thing is, World Nude Day originated in New Zealand!

I'm still not entirely sure what goes on in New Zealand, but I can tell you that for at least one day out of the year whatever IS going on in New Zealand is happening in the NUDE. In fact, the need to "drop trou" as the old saying goes is apparently so great, that World Nude Day is now celebrated all over the world.

Having done some research -- in my boxer shorts by the way, so I can kind of get in the mood to write this article -- I have discovered that World Nude Day was originally called "National Nude Day" and apparently took place in mid-July. Not sure what the impetus was to start celebrating the event in FEBRUARY during one of the coldest months on record, but in terms of body-heat, I guess it's a moot point.

What sets World Nude Day apart from say "World Naked Bike Ride Day" or "World Naked Gardening Day" is that World Nude Day doesn't take itself too seriously. In fact, the slogan for World Nude Day '09 is "Nude not LEWD." I ask you, does anything speak more of FREEDOM than a catch-phrase like that?

Whether you like it or not, nudism is widely practiced and certainly is not considered lewd among those who enjoy it. Lewd would be - I don't know - an overweight Monica Lewinsky peeling off all her clothes off and strolling down 5th Ave. But done in relative privacy with others who enjoy it? No big deal. It's all about freedom, baby.

My heart salutes everyone who is celebrating World Nude Day. In my own small way I will celebrate as well - although it will probably be more low key - like when I'm taking a shower.

  • World Nude Day is about freedom
  • The slogan this year is "Nude not Lewd"
  • February is an awfully cold month to dance around naked -- unless it's near my fire-place.

I guess they started celebrating in February instead of July because New Zealand is located on the Southern Hemisphere, therefore it is freezing in July in New Zealand!! It is really funny though, you get a discount at the hairdressers and stuff when you show up naked.

I agree. Being low key is much better. Great reporting. Happy Valentine's Day!

What I find interesting is that there isn't one day of the year where people are allowed to do whatever they want nude without any retribution, even if it means going to the supermarket or picking the kids up from school.

World Nude Day may have started in New Zealand, but National Nude Weekend was started here in the U.S.A. in 1976 by Lee Baxandall, founder of The Naturist Society. Read all about it at www.naturistsociety.com

I am surprised that anyone would associate the USA, nudity and freedom in the same article, Where nudity is concerned the USA is one of the most repressive countries in the western world. The results of that are predictable and well understood but there is a popular prejudice so nothinging changes and young people continue to be harmed. For many young people it is serious harm that lasts a lifetime.

Try comparing the attitudes towards the human body for the USA with those of Denmark or The Netherlands and then think long and hard about why a teenager in the USA is ten times more likely to become pregnant or to have an abortion. There are similar figures for a wide range of other body image and body knowledge related problems. Either be open and honest or young people will find out for themselves, often by experiment and often with devastating consequences.
