2010 Atlanta Braves MVP: Brian McCann

Brian McCann was scary to me as I watched the Atlanta Braves face off against the San Francisco Giants in the 2010 Playoffs. I was rooting for the Giants and every time he came up to bat he was ready and dangerous. However, in the competition for Team MVP I cannot ignore the contributions of Rookie Of The Year runner up Jason Heyward either. The numbers put up by Heyward make him a leading candidate for the honor as well. However, his playoff performance was weak and not being an Atlanta Braves fan I cannot say I felt his "presence" in terms of club contributions, having only seen a handful of their games. Decisions, decisions, and I've decided: Brian McCann.

Aside from the playoff threat that Brian McCann was he also played a big part in how the World Series turned out. During the All-star game it was McCann's hitting heroics that won the game and home field advantage for the National League team. Watching him in the playoffs I could tell he was an all out, hard nosed, giving it 110% ballplayer.

The catcher of a baseball team has got to be leader material and Brian McCann seems to have the goods. His playing 143 game behind the plate during the 2010 baseball season and with his team making the playoffs, shows he handled the pitching staff and the baseball well enough to earn honors.

On the offensive end of things Brian McCann was the POWER for the team, launching a leading 21 home runs over the walls of various big league parks. His numbers do fall behind Jason Heyward in most other categories, sometimes only slightly, but he did have 30 less strikeouts to couple with his statistics. He was nowhere near Heyward's speed when it came to stealing bases, only 5 to Heyward's 11, but then again looking at Brian McCann's physique, I am impressed that he steals bases at all! McCann was busy throwing out other teams trying to steal bases though, so forgive him for sending the focus elsewhere.

Jason Heyward had a great season and the buzz he brought to the Atlanta Braves ball club should not be overlooked. However, I feel the impact of Brian McCann as a veteran was the driving force behind a lot of the Atlanta Braves' success in game play and I became a fan.

Brian McCann is my pick for the 2010 Team MVP of the Atlanta Braves.
