2010 Belmont Stakes Results: Huge Upset

2010 Belmont Stakes Winner is Drosselmeyer in Huge Upset

Kevin VaLeu
13:1 Odds of Winning:

The 2010 Belmont Stakes Winner, Drosselmeyer, had the deck stacked against him, but it didn't matter in the end as Drosselmeyer defeated Fly Down by three-quarters of a length in the 12-horse field in a time of 2:31.57. Fly Down had beaten Drosselmeyer by six lengths in the Dwyer Stakes earlier at Belmont Park on May 8.

The first card against Drosselmeyer was the 13:1 odds set by the oddsmakers. The second card against Drosselmeyer was that Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has never won a Triple Crown race. However, irony would have it that Drosselmeyer would give jockey Mike Smith his first Belmont win in his 13th try. Say 13 is unlucky no more.

The 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes observed an incredible leashing of a late sprint by Drosselmeyer that enabled him to pass several horses down the home stretch to win a cool $1 million in the third and final leg of the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes).

The Belmont Stakes Winner gives WinStar Farm its second win of the Triple Crown season. They also own Super Saver, who won the Kentucky Derby earlier last month.

Attendance Down:

The 2010 Belmont Stakes Winner went largely unappreciated by a largely subdued and lower than normally attended crowd. The 2010 Belmont Stakes crowd of 45,243 was down from 52,861 in 2009 and 94,476 in 2008 (that's less than half that attended this year). It is believed that one factor playing a huge role in a declined attendance was the absence of both the Kentucky Derby winner (Super Saver) and the Preakness winner (Lookin At Lucky) that decided to pass over this race.
