2010 Best Actress Oscar Goes to Sandra Bullock

Andrea Coventry
Sandra Bullock was the unsurprising winner of the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. Oscar buzz began circulating around her soon after her movie, "The Blind Side," came out. She began to get nomination after nomination, always disbelieving that she was deserving of the role. And then she started winning awards. As she added more and more awards and accolades to her collection, it felt more and more likely that she would get the ultimate award, the Oscar statue. Barbara Walters even interviewed her for the Academy Award special that aired prior to the ceremony.

When receiving her award, Sandra Bullock managed to intersperse serious gratitude with her trademark sarcastic comedy that has made her seem more like a real person, and less like a movie star, throughout all of this. She individually addressed each of her fellow nominees. Her most endearing comment was to Gabourey Sidibe, who was nominated for her introductory breakthrough performance in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire." Sandra said, "Gabby, I love you so much. You are exquisite. You are beyond words to me." She also gave props to her own mother, for instilling in her the traits needed to achieve this dream.

This is Sandra Bullock's first Academy Award nomination and win.

"The Blind Side" is the true story of Michael Oher, who was a homeless African American boy who had suffered great trauma in his life. Leigh Anne Tuohy, played by Bullock, takes him in as her son, and he goes on to become a successful, All-American football player.
