2010 Census Form Questions Too Personal? $5,000 Fine for Refusing Information

Elle
The 2010 Census has raised considerable controversy with many citizens who feel the government is getting too big and too involved with our lives. The questions on the form this year include very detailed and personal requests for information on every person in your home along with serious consequences for not answering the questions.

WHAT INFORMATION DO THEY WANT?

On the 2010 Census Form there are 10 questions, which include more information than is required for statistical data. The government now wants to know the following:

The full name, sex, date of birth, and national origin/race of every single person who resides in your home. They also want to know if you own or rent your home. To top it off, they are requiring you provide your phone number.

WHO SAID, "NO" TO COMPLETING THE FORM?

Back in June of 2009, many people, including Michelle Bachmann (R) Minnesota Congresswoman verbalized their opposition to providing this personal information.

Apparently, the group Acorn, which had so many discretionary issues with the election process, was going to be a part of the census collection. Michelle Bachmann said she just wasn't comfortable providing her personal information to that group of individuals. She said she would give the number of people in her home and that was all the information she would be providing for her family.

After many Republicans and the general public voiced their concern about Acorns participation,The Census Bureau severed ties with Acorn READ FULL ARTICLE But that might not have been enough to sway Michelle Bachmann who still feels the questions are too personal. But what consequences could she, and others, face for not providing the requested information on the form.

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF OBJECTION?

According to US CODE, "Whoever over 18 years of age that refuses or willfully neglects to answer any of the questions on the schedule submitted to him in connection with the census shall be fined not more than $5,000."

WHEN TO EXPECT YOUR FORM

According to the official 2010 Census website, you should receive your census form in the mail in March of 2010. April 1st is National Census Day, when the government expects to receive all forms back from residents. From April to July census takers will visit the homes of those whose forms were not complete. Then in December of 2010 the population information is delivered to the President.

WE WANT YOUR OPINION

What we want to know is, has the government gone too far? Do you feel comfortable completing the form and providing yours and your children's personal information? What could the government use your phone number for? Do you feel these questions are constitutional? Please leave your comments.

Yup. How about those illegals. Note that the No. 1 question was in it's own little block within the form. Hmmmmm wonder what that was all about? No. 1 only here.

No I feel they are unconstitutional !! I was basically harrassed by these individuals ... I dont feel that they need anything more than the number of people living here after all it has to do with how many "representives " each state has right well how is the other info needed ... for those of us who do NOT know our ethnic back ground I dont feel it is uncle sams business either ! I feel that they just need to keep thier noses out of my personal space and most of all respect those they are incoviencing !! QA for the phone number bull crap just another invasion of privacy ... I will givem mine then change it ! Really they have no need ... jerks

Recently, I found the 2010 Census form hanging on my door. As I began filling it out, I came across a dilemma. The U.S. government wants to know if my children are adopted or not and it wants to know what our races are. Being adopted myself, I had to put "Other" and "Don't Know Adopted" for my race and "Other" and "Don't Know" for my kids' races.

Can you imagine not knowing your ethnicity, your race? Now imagine walking into a vital records office and asking the clerk for your original birth certificate only to be told "No, you can't have it, it's sealed."

How about being presented with a "family history form" to fill out at every single doctor's office visit and having to put "N/A Adopted" where life saving information should be?

Imagine being asked what your nationality is and having to respond with "I don't know".

It is time that the archaic practice of sealing and altering birth certificates of adopted persons stops.

Adoption is a 5 billion dollar, unregula

I am not only offended - I feel frightened. Not because I have anything at all to hide, but because it is so reminiscent of countires such as Nazi Germany who mandated information gathering for identifying and rounding up Jews, Gypsies and other select people. The census may how many people live in a home, if we are citizens. But our names, ages, mortgage, income, kids (adopted, or etc). is NO ONE's business. Personally, I think we all need to wake up and be concerned here. That such personal information has become mandatory to report - what is the real agenda here?

We are not planning to fully complete the form. We will not provide incorrect info, but we only plan to indicated the number of people living in our home. They should have asked if the residents are American Citizens. That question, I would answer. The rest, such as if we own our home, etc. is none of the government's business. If I'm current on my mortgage, or don't have a mortgage, then no one should worry about the ownership of my home.

  • Aldomeir3/18/2010

There is one VERY important question NOT asked...US CITIZEN? So the enumeration will tally ALL people - both legal and ILLEGAL residents.
