2010 Census: State Population Growth and Reapportionment

Congressional Reapportionment Affects 18 States

J.C. Grant
This article ranks the 50 U.S. states according to their population growth between decennial census years 2000 and 2010: it includes population growth percentages, population data from the 2010 Census and 2000 Census, and reapportionment data.

Among the ten fastest growing states, five are located in the West and five are situated in the South. By contrast, the ten slowest growing states are located mainly in the East and Midwest, including one state with negative population growth.

These population growth figures are particularly important because they are used for congressional reapportionment which, in turn, affects the size of legislative delegations and the number of electoral votes each state receives during presidential elections.

Based on the population growth figures below, twelve congressional seats will be reapportioned: Texas gains four; Florida gains two; Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington each gain one; New York loses two; Ohio loses two; and Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania each lose one.

Nice work JC. Hey, do a follow up listing the migration between states. I understand many Rust Belt states and the NE are losing population in favor of less high tax and "progressive-led" states. I'd love to see the numbers.

We closed the TN borders....no more people allowed to move here!

I'm surprised anyone wants to come to NY right now - taxes are killing us! cheers

...and to think the population of Las Vegas was only 250,000 when I moved to NV...too bad it didn't stay that way:)
